I can vouch for this program, too. It will find cookies AND registry keys left by spyware.

In the past, I have gone through system cleaning to delete spyware from my histroy/cookies/temp folders...and I would still have problems (i.e. redirected home page, bad url typed and you are sent elsewere). Ad-Aware will clean all the registrty keys associated with known spyware. It also has an update file, just like AV programs.
Best of all, the basic program is FREE!!!

I'm not asking you directly Carol, but perhaps someone can help. I've downloaded Ad-Ware, and it seems to pretty neat. Only one thing, I really don't know if what is in the log is good or bad? I have several that say "WinShow Hijacker" It sounds bad, but I don't know. I also have a "Kontiki Data Miner" none of this sounds familiar, but once again I don't know. Any thoughts?

ADDED-------------

Never mind, I just deleted everything. I figured that anything I used would reload anyway (gota be the hillbilly in me) and it worked! So I guess Marc isn't using pop-up ads afterall (actually I knew this -- it never happened at work)

Dave - good job

Dave,

You did right. I have yet to see Ad-Aware identify something that wasn't spyware. Just let it do it's thing and your good to go.

The only thing that may be questionable that I have seen is Windows Media Player 9 now stores a unique ID code/cookie. I deleted it anyways... I don't want/need Bill spying on me!

I just hope AD-Aware basic remains free!!

BTW
Norton's NAV 2004 is suppose to include spyware tools but will also have product activation similar to Windows XP.
No more sharing one NAV disk with your entire family

& some other stuff

Good Advice Everyone,
The Ad-Aware is great; it's going on my home box tonight. I would not run a microslop box without Norton or McAfee AV software installed and an updated subscription. My mother runs an XP box and updates her Norton signatures 1st before opening msOutlook or msInternetExplorer. This may be overkill but she has never had a virus (but she gets a ton of contaminated email!).

Here's some other products that I find useful:
East-Tec Eraser - deletes all those cookies and other garbage downloaded to your hard drive by msIE. Very configurable and capable of wiping the recycle bin, files, file slack, empty space and even the Winders Swap (slop) file from your computer in a completely unrecoverable way. BE CAREFUL. (Great stuff if you donate old computers to charity.)

Pop Up Stopper - just what it says. Visual and auditory warning of a popup window attempt. Let's you allow popups one by one with the CRTL or SHIFT keys. Can be turned on and off with one click in the System tray.

John,

I used pop up stopper for a while, but I think I has some program conflicts with it. But when it worked, it was great.

Another I use is X-Cleaner, free version here
http://www.xblock.com/
Designed for WIN98. Free version will clean out all your temp files, history, cookies, etc. and will search for some spyware. I like it for a quick cleanup at work.

I set my security to prompt me before accepting scripts. Pop-ups use scripts and all I do is "Just Say No". I also have it set to ask before accepting cookies. It is amazing how many sites use cookies. Speaking of cookies...it is past lunch time!
