Talking the results over with fellow coworkers I have a few quesitons.

Next time I do the test, should I only use one mic or can I use a family of mic?

Thanks

My customers require R&R for each instruments and I have to write the serial number of the instruments. So one mic means one R&R, two mics two R&R and so on.
Unfurtunately it makes sense

Anyone use air gaging? I brought this idea up to management, and they responded by saying air gaging it to job specific. Well we are measuring diameters from 0-4 inches. To me that would be pretty basic setup.
Any comments??

The air gauging I have used in the past was not versatile to cover 0-4". You could use the same readout but you would need different heads to cover the range. Would a set of mic's not work?

Our mics seem to be failiing us. I just wondered how hard would it be to have a range from 0-4" on an air gaging setup and a rough cost.

0-4" yeah would cost you to much, the rings for the air gaging I think are under $200, but the column are $2,000 to I think around $5,000. Keyence is around $7,000 for the small ø to $15,000 all tricked out. Laser would be the best for grinding. My last company we had 2 laser mikes, they work great but are to big and not designed for shop floor, the keyence are smaller and are sopposed to be robust enough for the shop floor. I also think mitotoya also has lasers like the keyence systems.

I think the first question is," What is the tolerance we are looking at?", and the second question is, "Why did the mic's fail, is it a bad GR&R was it the environment causing damage to the mic's?"

Read from page 1, and there may be another thread. He works in a grinding shop so tol are typical .0002" up to about .001" Most grinding jobs from my experince are ±.0005"

Laser mics are great, but cost is high. You might find that air gaging is better and cheaper. They are more robust for shop floor use as well. Keyence makes a shop floor laser mic. Edmunds makes very good air columns.

I am not endorsing either and have no affiliations with either.

I am looking into laser mics, and I can only find a few that only go up to 2.56" ( http://www.keyence.com/products/vision/micrometer/micrometer.php ) , Do you have to have custom laser mics made up if you want to measure larger parts. We have a lot of parts from 1-3", and some from 3-4", which really struggles with Gage RR because a 3-4" mic is hard to handle.

Thanks
