8.2.3.1 Monitoring and measurement of manufacturing processes - Tool change

In 8.2.3.1 Monitoring and measurement of manufacturing processes it states "Significant process events, such as tool change or machine repair, shall be recorded"
By tool change does this refer to a change to the tool itself, or changing from one tool to the next, if you use multiple tool on one machine?

If any one could clear this up for me that would be great :thanx:

Welcome to the Cove.

IMHO the requirement is to document either of the situations you mentioned. Any change in the process can cause a variation and documentation of those changes on the control chart can help in reviewing the process.

If however, you are meaning you use multiple tools CONCURRENTLY or in a series, then I would expect the movement from one tool to the next is already accounted for in your process studies and regular movement would not have to be specifically recorded. Only signifficant CHANGES to the process have to be recorded.

The conformance of the tools running concurrently in the process would be verifed with first article inspection.

If one of those tools need to be changed then the TS clause would apply.

Thanks for that. Just to clarify, the tools are used one after the other, not concurrently.

One after the other without stopping and changing the tool? I would still consider that part of the normal process. If you ran for a while then stopped and changed, I would consider that a change and would think it requires annotation on the control chart.

Thanks Dave,

This is where we face a problem though. When we change tools we change control charts as well. At the moment it is hards to track any tools changes due to we can have up to 45 control charts for one machine. This is because we have control charts for parts not processes. We are going to be change this, in the near future when we change our control charts to monitor processes. The only problem is that they are still going to be tool specific since the company classifies using a different tool as a different process. (Sorry, I am talking about adjustable extruder dies)
Do you have any suggestions to how we could improve this?
