Hello All,
My interpretation of sec. 8.2.4.2, First Article Inspection of AS9100B is that any new part that is run requires a FAIR using SAE AS 9102 3 page form. Is this correct? Thanks!

AS9102 is not mandatory per AS9100B. You could use self developed forms for the FAIR. Some OEM's, however, mandate the use of 9102 for FAI.

Sidnet;

Make sure you are using rev. c. I have if you need.

Thanks
I was answering the question where the poster specifically mentioned 9100B. Since nobody can attain ICOP approved certification to AS9100C yet (and for several months to come), folks still need to keep conformity to Rev. B.

Oh, and by the way, I do have a purchased copy of both editions of the standard. You should not offer to provide a copy of a document protected by copyright here at The Cove, because it is against the policy and it is illegal.

I'll see you in Charlotte, next week.

I apologise for the lack of taking into account legal issues; am new to the site; trying to help.

Do not need the sarcasm; its painfully obvious you are an auditor and I'm a sales person.

Hi Sidney,

i have a question, as i'm relatively new to the AS9100. Regarding FAIR, as we aim to become certified, does this apply to all parts produced whether it is an "in-process" or "finished" part?

It’s not the final product that is of concern, it’s the part where we just do a few things and send it to the customer who will create the finished product of the 'in-process' part they received from us.

While i'm in this question: Section 7.5.1.3 talks about validation of equipment. Can an FAI be used to validate the equipment? Or is this more of an "and" and not an "or" type of situation to deal with validation?

Thanks

Sidney I agree with you.

By choice, we/I use the 9102 Form and it isn't flowed down by any of our customers as of yet. The reason we/I use the 9102 because I am familiar with the form and I have trained the Inspectors to use it to, using the FAQ on the OASIS database, besides my experience with them.

I have also had FAI's documented on the drawing itself which was accepted by P & W awhile back. But, it is really a choice by the Organization (as you said in-directly) unless it is part of the Purchasing Documents requirements.

This is definately a question, not a reply to this thread but it has to do with FAI so I thought I'd put it here.

We usually create one proto type part - that's it. It generally will be machined on various machines (operations)- sometimes the same "part" will be machined on two different types of machines at the same time.

The first article is done when the job is finished (with in-process inspections being performed when necessary). Should a first article be performed for each component or assembly when it's machining process has been completed and the part is going to the next machine (operation)? Or are we OK performing the first article at the completion of the part?

What if we make 4 of the same part. Are we supposed to complete (1) part and perform a FAI at that time and then produce the last three?? (This would not be practical):nope: Or do we machine all four and inspect the first one that is finished? or all four?

Oh, and I am speaking of the actual inspection...not just the report.

Hope someone can understand what I'm asking.

Hi,
You seem to be on the right track.:)
The FAI should be done when the lot or single prototype is complete... as you are doing. Once the run of parts is completely done, we take a representative sample (as each part was made using the same process{es}) and do the FAI.

Hope this helps!
