A funny calibration quote

Just thought I would share something that was said to us yesterday.
We were out on a new line here, checking some torque indicators, and looked on their table and spotted a thread gauge. The line engineer was there we asked, if it needed calibrated and what it was used for. His repsonse, I'm not making this up, was.........

"It's not really a gauge, we just use it to measure the threaded holes" :lmao:

Just thought I would pass on that humor for today.

That's a good one - thanks for sharing.....:lmao:

I had one yesterday too. I was looking at a weigh scale and asking what it was used for (product count) and I was told -"It self calibrates.........."!!:mg:

It's also sad that so many people 'talk' calibration, but don't know what they're saying......:notme:

Yes. I'm guessing that the person you're referring to just doesn't understand what "calibration" means in the QMS sense of the term, and was relying on what the manufacturer refers to as "self calibration":

isoCAL-Automatically calibrates and adjusts the balance
The balance automatically self-calibrates and performs span adjustments at predetermined time and temperature changes, or can be programmed to self calibrate up to 3 times per day as defined by the user, ensuring maximum precision and repeatability.

Or even worse: "For reference only." ;)

Where I work, if someone has a multimeter in their toolbox that's used for troubleshooting only (e.g. check a fuse or see if a battery has any juice), it gets a "no calibration required" sticker. Of course, I know the subject of "to cal or not to cal" has been beat to death, but if it is a low accuracy meter that is not being used for traceable calibrations that will be reported on a certificate, we don't bother putting it on a recall schedule or otherwise tracking it (beyond a basic toolbox inventory), it ain't worth the man-hours.

Along the lines of the "for reference only" sticker, I've seen other labs put a sticker that says "not for quantifiable measurements" on their toolbox meters. But we have to put some kind of sticker on everything, whether it's a no cal required or a "limited use" sticker. We've gotten hit up on audits before for not having stickers on things like decade boxes and variacs. But we have had auditors tell us to put "for reference only" on charts, graphs, look-up tables, etc. that weren't included as part of an official calibration procedure (e.g. a thermocouple chart hanging on a wall). Is that going overboard?

I've heard that one too many times. In fact, companies who sell quality/calibration-related stickers have ready-made "For Reference Only" stickers. I wonder what the people who buy them use them for?
We have the related "Not in Calibration System" stickers. They were used mainly for the air gages on certain pieces of equipment to indicate that there is, indeed, some air going to the equipment. We fought the initial auditor's finding tooth and nail, and lost. Later, another auditor asked why we had these crazy stickers on our air gauges...

Now, I put them on our wall clocks.

Once upon a time, in a land not so far away, I had an employee suggest that we put "Hand Tool - No Calibration Required" stickers on all of our screwdrivers, pliers, hammers, etc.

We were working for a supplier to the DoD with in-house DCMC representatives, and his interpretation of Mil-Q-9858A at the time led him to believe that this was the proper thing to do. I suggested that it would only be another way in which the DCMC reps could ding us, should they find a screwdriver missing one of these labels (as it would be a documented internal requirement as proposed by my fellow employee).

My counter proposal was to wait until such time as the DCMC folks dinged us for NOT having a process in place for labeling said hand tools, then we would address the issue. Of course we never ran into this situation (as the DCMC folks had a little more common sense than this fellow did).:D

Oh... you mean when someone says "I need to calibrate my schedule"!:mg:

Of course, my wife's schedule is the Standard, so....

Speaking of a standard, 1 process engineer approached me to show her calibration data. What she has was a control chart showing an in-control repeated measurements. When i asked what is the standard/reference value that reply was,
"Can't you see it's consistent!? Then it must be correct and calibrated!":lmao:

Whoa, i should have said its consistent of course, but may be consistently wrong, right?
