Gage R&R Output

I'm new to Gage R&R and am trying to determine what is the industry standard for a "good" result. The spreadsheet I downloaded outputs results for EV, AV, R&R, PV, and TV. Which output is the best to base judgments about the equipment on? And what is a typical acceptable value?

Your help is appreciated.

JMITCHEL,

If you are in the automotive industry I would look in the AIAG MSA manual for general requirements for R&R. This general guideline is based on a 10%, 20%, 30% scale.

A realistic guideline should be determined based on the measurement discrimination required for the use of a specific gage. These guidelines should be noted in the appropriate areas of your quality system documentation.

R&R is a good place to start but the MSA system needs to evolve to determine bias, linearity, and stability.

This is a very general overview and I hope other members of the forum will have further input.

R&R upto 10% means the measurement system is acceptable. If it is between 10% and 30%, the system may be acceptable on the basis of criticalitu of application. A lot of subject matter knowledge would have to go into justifying acceptability.

In addition, you should consider Control Chart analysis for every operator to determine influence of operator and methods over overall R&R. Control charts can also help determine adequacy of part-to-part variation.

Lastly, there are 2 more ways of determining adequacy of the system for a particular application, viz,
1.comparison of R&R error with Standard Deviation of the manufacturing process you are trying to control and
2.comparison of R&R error with design Tolerance.

These two methods would show you how much of your process std deviation (or tolerance) is 'eaten up' by measurement system error.

dear atul
as you have said that acceptance limit is 10 % is good. But can you give e.g. of instrument supplier name who give / supply instrument with 10% RR with respect to process variation.

I doubt if any gage manufacturer can actually guarantee 10% R&R.

You may refer to the discussions under the thread 'New Gage R&R' on this forum.
