Motherboard manufacturers in Taiwan have prematurely announced the prices of Advanced Micro Devices' new dual-core processors two days early.
Though OEMs will have the final say on prices, the Opteron 865 will debut at the same price as the high-end single-core Opteron 852 at $1514. The Opteron 870 and Opteron 875 will debut at $2,149 and $2,649 respectively.
The processors, though reported to outperform Intel's new Pentium Extreme 840, are markedly more expensive. The Pentium comes in at $999, running at 3.2 GHz.
Not due for release until Thursday, dual-core solutions from AMD are hotly awaited. The prices quoted should, however, only be regarded as a guideline, since OEMs will decide on final pricing for their AMD systems. AMD is expected to announce several industry partnerships on Thursday, where system builders will use the chips in their new machines.
By including two processing units into a single design, dual-core chips will bring improved performance when running multiple applications - even though speeds will initially be lower than current single core offerings.
