"All threads Coated" - 8.2.4 Monitoring and Measurement of Product question

I seem to be at an impasse with this standard and our process. There are multiple layers to this issue.

We are running a nut coating process. The only specifications given by our customer is "All threads Coated". They also limit us on what we can put on the labels we place on the inspected parts. Namely the lot number, size and quantity.

Their lot numbers only change about once a month.

What is a good way to follow this standard without adding too much extra work? We have debating this internally for several months. We currently are filling out a daily log for viscosity & amounts of solvent used, but that is it.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Re: 8.2.4 Monitoring and Measurement or product question

Clause 8.2.4 applies only to the monitoring and inspection of product, as the title implies. The product in this case could have two meanings: the physical product that you are coating (the nutz) and/or the service you are providing (the coating).

In your case the true product to consider is the service you are providing: the coating service. The specifications of your 'product' include the specifications for the physical product (as specified by the customer) and the specifications you have set for the process parameters to ensure that you provide the proper coating. Therefore your inspection (and inspection records) should include the 'all threads coated' requirement, any specifications for coating thicknes, appearance, etc., the proper product packaging and identification (lot number, size & quantity), and any process parameters that you are monitoring (time, temperature, current, dilution rates, viscosity, etc.). How often you check all these specifications & parameters and how you document them is up to you to decide and for your customer to agree with.

Hope this helps a little.
