An ISO/TS16949 Registration Maintenance Diary

#31
:agree1: ISO/TS 16949:2002 Periodic Audit #2:
ZERO non-conformances
TEN positive indicators
THREE opportunities for improvement

I didn't think it was possible to generate 0 Findings with DNV auditing!

Opportunities:
  1. Add a revision level verification for Printed Circuit Boards at Incoming Inspection. This is currently done at the beginning of a job by the assembler leaving us open to possible inventory inaccuracies and has happened once in the 8 years I've been here.
  2. Improve the clarity, completeness and follow up on Supplier Corrective Action Requests. We found one SCAR out of 160 in the system that did not have a contact name. Fortunately, there are only 5 people that can enter a SCAR into our system so they are pretty easy to track down.
  3. Improve the timeliness and oversight of the ECO system. We tracked down 5 ECO's that have been open for over a year. All of them had a valid reason for remaining open (e.g. for a revised design that has not been validated due to customer hesitation). This did take a little longer than usual because our Document Coordinator has been on sick leave for 6 weeks but we found them all and validated them in less than 20 minutes.

I shall immediately and in this order:
Close the audit report after entering the opportunities into our Continual Improvement System.
Clear off my desk.
Request a raise.
Request business cards that say "Quality Manager".
Take a week long vacation at the beach.:notme:

As always, I'm Icy.

DNV Periodic Audit #2 was scheduled for today and tomorrow (July 20 and 21, 2006) but I am typing this today because my auditor is stuck in Utah due to aircraft malfunction. It’s always something!
I'm sure he would rather have some Icy. It's been over 100° here for the last two weeks...

By all means, go for it!

Sinusoidality - The condition of being sinusoidal. For example, determination of sinusoidality refers to determining whether a waveform is a sine wave vs. a half-sine, a square wave. etc.

I've got a milliion of 'em. You go Sidney! However, Senator, I shall assert my rights as a United States citizen under the 5th Amendment to the Constitution of the United States and decline to answer on the grounds that I may tend to incriminate myself.

I thought it had to do with “sinus” and “suicide” after an audit:D

:topic: So would "rectality" describe a square wave then? :notme:
Example: I collected waveform data from his process to evaluate for sinusoidality. Instead I learned that his process clearly demonstrated rectality.

C'mon Ralph, do you see my findings lists? My system was installed, and is run, in such a way that my audits are like a day off with pay!:notme:

No, that would describe auditors who cannot hear reason due to the unfortunate location of their skull.
Example: The auditor could not hear my answer because of the rectality of his cranium. (Please note that I have never met an auditor from DNV that evidences rectality. I swear. Especially not RJ.);)
Edit:
Wow! I've been away for a few months so I am re-amazed at how quickly and willingly a totally serious thread can go completely off the rails here at the Cove. That's why I keep coming back. Now everybody straighten up! Spread out! Wooo-wooo-Wooo! <shuffle, shuffle>

Enough standing around the water cooler, time Icy to do some serious work on the Cove.

Management Review in September 2006. Everything is going along smoothly. We had the best year ever (our fiscal is September-August). A few minor action items but nothing serious.

Internal Audit #2 for calendar 2006 went off last week. No findings. I did generate a some really picky document control findings during process/product audits for the two products that are under TS rules. In one case, the production team had one page of one drawing at one station that was at a previous revision. This is out of ~100 pages of drawings and instructions x 4 stations. In another, a wiring diagram that is called out on the BOM was not in use. Between the Work Instructions and assembly drawings, it is not necessary to properly assemble the product. Technically, if it is on the BOM, the production team should have it. Picky, Icy, picky.

I would be concerned that we are not auditing hard enough and not being picky enough it weren't for the activity in our Improvement system.

In 2005 we processed:
30 Continual Improvements
16 Preventive Actions
54 Corrective Measures

In 2006 (so far) we processed:
53 Continual Improvements
23 Preventive Actions
30 Corrective Measures

For the last 6 months it breaks down this way:
39 Continual Improvements
15 Preventive Actions
10 Corrective Measures

What I see is a definite trend from reactive to proactive measures. In addition, our quality system has become ingrained in our culture. It is rare to find the "small" mistakes like missing signoffs, incomplete records, etc. that are the QA Manager's bane.

Coming up:
Management Review in December 2006 and another 2 day DNV surveillance in January 2007.
