what has become, realistically, a relatively useless, but still to some a lucrative, "standard".
Yeah...that.

I remain interested to see someone's cost-benefit analysis on ISO cert (outside of "customer mandates it") that shows higher benefit than cost.

Please understand...a robust QMS wins cost-benefit every time...I'm talking about the ISO cert itself...I can (do) have a robust QMS already outside of ISO.

The 2020 Edition of the annual ISO Survey is out now. Check it @ The ISO Survey

Annual ISO Survey of Management System Certificate Numbers - September 2023

According to the dataset provided by ISO, the number of ISO 9001 certificates in the USA is down to fewer than 21,000. And China represents more than 1/3 of the total number of ISO 9001 certificates in the World.

As usual, there are discrepancies between the numbers provided in the two spreadsheets; for example, check the number of ISO 9001 certificates in the USA in both files. In the second one, split by Sector Numbers, the total number of certificates is 22,660. Further, some of the numbers on the first file make no sense; for example, in the ISO 13485 tab Trinidad & Tobago has no ISO 13485 certificates, but it has close to 5,000 sites certified for ISO 13485. It makes no sense.

Interesting. Sorting by # of certificates, the top 5 9001:2015 countries are:
  • China 324621
  • Italy 91493
  • Germany 49349
  • Japan 32287
  • India 32236

USA is #11 in that sort order.

Agree, interesting. In the "made me look" category, I browsed back and looked at the data from 2006:
  • 9001 certs in the US (<21K as noted above) have dropped more than half of what was in the 2006 report (44K certs)
  • 9001 certs worldwide barely grew (relatively) between 2006 and 2020 (899K up to 916K)
  • 13485 certs increased in the US from 2100 to 3400
  • 13485 certs worldwide had a pretty big jump from 8100 to 26K
I guess there's enough action, though, that the CBs aren't quaking in their boots just yet? Or is the drop in US 9001 certs causing a stir?

How much of the drop in ISO9001 certs is due to fewer manufacturing companies in the United States?

It is pretty evident (now) that the data being used to compile this survey is very unreliable, due to the voluntary participation of the sources.
13485 certs increased in the US from 2100 to 3400 and 13485 certs worldwide had a pretty big jump from 8100 to 26K
Two years ago I had created the animated chart @ Top 10 countries ISO 13485 Certificates 2004-2017 I find interesting that China's ISO 13485 certificates are not much higher, vis a vis the ISO 9001 "dominance" they have.
According to the latest data from the ISO survey, for ISO 13485 certificates, the top 10 countries are:

There is a reason for More Registrar Consolidation & Divestitures - June 2021

How much of the drop in ISO9001 certs is due to fewer manufacturing companies in the United States?
That might be a contributing factor. We had many a discussion @ Reasons for the Decline of ISO 9001 Registrations Worldwide and ISO Strategy 2030 - Why can't they learn?

Sidney, I promise you that there are not 4,000+ sites in Trinidad and Tobago which are covered by ISO 13485. Clearly an error by whoever did that spreadsheet.

I am aware of only one (1) company in Trinidad and Tobago which claims certification to ISO 13485 (just checked their website, but they don't mention certification), and I believe they have a single site.

Thanks for the confirmation. The column with the number of sites certified in each country has glaring errors. The ISO secretariat (ISO 9001:2015 certified) should be embarrassed by letting a document out with these obvious mistakes.

PS. I looks like the Excel file has been revised and the number of sites column has been corrected.
