It doesn't need to be on the network to transfer the files. All you would need is a crossover cable (which is different to a patch cable which is used to connect your PC to a network). You would simply disconnect the patch cable from your netowrked PC, plug in the crossover cable to your PC and laptop, creating in essence a 2 pc standalone network, run the microsoft network wizard on your laptop and then you can transfer over your files at a much higher speed and without the need for third party software.
I'll ask a couple of people that I know to see if they have any suggestions for some usb transfer software as well.
