Anyone using Office 2007?

I downloaded a free 60-day trial of the new and improved Microsoft Office 2007, and it seems like a lot of window-dressing was done, but not much in the way of actual improvement. For one thing, it's definitely more of a RAM hog than its predecessors. For another, the familiar menus have been replaced with so-called "ribbons" (see the attached screen grab) the primary purpose of which seems to be making long-time users search for stuff that they didn't have to search for before. I'd be interested to know if anyone here has used it, and what you think about it.

Office 2007? Not yet: The std procedure here is to stick with the old version until the torrent of external documents using the new format becomes too much of a burden. I don't mind, btw: Knowing MS I'm happy to let others pull the guinea pig duty.

I had the 60 day beta trial, on my home pc, a few months back, was more than happy when it fiinshed and I went back to 2003. I suppose it's just difficult getting used to something when you've been doing the same thing for a few years. As you say, not a lot of improvements, just visually bringing it into line with Vista. I found it hard work trying to format anything, spent more time trying to find things, than actually doing the work.

My son downloaded and used the free trial a couple of months ago and he is very happy with it. In fact, he is planning on buying the real thing as he is an IT student at university so he gets it 'really cheap'

I have just ordered a new hard disk to load Vista onto. I decided that £30 for a new HD was worth it rather than delete my working version of XP from the existing HD.

I tried the trial and it lasted about 4 days.... went back to Office 2000... works just fine for me !

That seems prudent. Have a peek at this thread: So, how about Vista? Speaking for myself, I'll keep XP running for a good long while yet.

Sorry if this is too off topic but as long as it is already brought up in the thread, I am looking for opinions on Windows Vista.

I am buying my granddaughter a computer for her graduation and everything seems to be pre-loaded with Vista. I keep hearing horror stories about compatibility issues with peripherals and software. I don't want to have to upgrade to new versions of software if I don't have to.

Anyone have any experience with it?

My wife's company was selling the standard version for $20.00 to employees.
I told her to grab one but haven't received it yet.

I'll probably sit on it until I upgrade my home desktop.

Thanks Jim, I wanted to try the new version of office, didn't realize they offerred a demo so this will be great. From what I understand, they decided to oust the old drop down menus in favor of this "ribbon" set up. The claim is that it takes some of the less prominent options from older versions and brings them into a more visible area in hopes that standard users will find more functionality for the program by having more options visible.

When a major change like this is instituted it does take patience to learn...however, I agree that any change should make things easier to find/use, not the other way around. Anyhow I'll give it a look and see if I find it frustrating or pleasant.
