For further clarification purposes, here are some paragraphs taken from OEM PPAP requirements with regards to AAR. As you can see, it is your customer who makes "the call" on AAR requirements. Also note how each OEM defines "Appearance Item."
CRYSLER
1.4 Appearance Approval Report (AAR)
Organizations shall complete an Appearance Approval Report if the design records include any appearance features (e.g. Color, Grain, Finish, Appearance Standards, or Mastering Standards). Prior to submission of the PSW, organizations shall obtain a Chrysler Design Office approval signature on the AAR.
NOTE: Both Interior and Exterior parts are included in the AAR procedure.

1. Appearance Approval Report (AAR) (CFG-1002 is required for all parts with color, grain. gloss or textiles
NOTE: An AAR is not required for surface quality of body in white (BIW) parts. Refer to the General Motors North America Surface Buyoff Procedure for Surface Requirements of BIW parts.
2. Appearance Approval may occur concurrently with part inspection and testing.
NOTE: Organizations should contact the appropriate Appearance Approval group for the specified GM PPAP Approval organization as soon as possible to make arrangements for AAR sample submission. Parts may be submitted for AAR approval as soon as all materials are approved.
FORD
14 Appearance Approval Report (AAR) (PPAP 2.2.13)
All parts/products having appearance criteria shall be reviewed and approved by the appropriate Ford activity. The completed Appearance Approval Report (form CFG-1002) shall accompany all submissions. After approval signatures have been obtained from the designated Ford representative, the AAR form shall be included with Warrant.
NOTE 1: Appearance items are: all interior, exterior, luggage compartment, and select under-hood components which are visible to the customer. Appearance approval includes, but is not limited to: overall appearance, surface quality, color, texture, and gloss.
NOTE 2: Visual "match-to-master" is the specified requirement for AAR sign-off. Numeric evaluations should only be used for on-going quality control after visually acceptable parts/products are attained.
