Applying FMEA to all Pre-Production Processes

Any thoughts on the usefulness of applying (P)FMEA concepts to all the steps leading up to releasing a job into production - including reviewing customer specs, order entry, creating the manufacturing drawing, mapping the process, scheduling, etc.?

The steps leading up to manufacture are processes after all, and it is PROCESS-FMEA.

Also, aside from what's required for PPAP, how about not creating a PFMEA specific to each new job, but instead having one living document that is all encompassing for each pre-production processes.

  • Anyone doing FMEA on pre-production processes?
  • Is there maybe another tool that would suit this example better?

Thanks in Advance!

FMEA is a process used to anticipate and prevent bad things from happening, and in that sense it's adaptable to just about anything. Anywhere along the line where trouble might occur it's a good idea to do prevention.

The AIAG "rules" allow for "family" PFMEAs and control plans, but even so, PFMEA isn't generally required at the level you're describing, so you should feel free to adapt it as you see fit.

Detailed PFMEA is a part of PPAP, but the concepts that are at its basis are applicable for all processes.
IMHO, as to the other processes you have mentioned, probably a risk analysis could be more beneficial as well, but this is a choice from the organization.
The core should be that the organization has embodied the status of mind to prenvent potential problems.

Thanks! So no harm in trying...

I'm curious about the format of 'risk analysis'. From my review of the post attachment list, there doesn't seem to be anything there to help with this type of application. Maybe it's something that needs to be created specifically for us.

What you describe could be considered a "System FMEA" rather than a process or product related FMEA. I remember reading about this in an earlier version of the AIAG FMEA guidebook. Not sure at the moment if it is still in the current version. As Jim, stated, it is up to you if you want to do it. Nothing says you can't.
