Does the internal audit need to cover all iso clauses

Hey everyone,

I am working on a preparation for internal audit, and I was told by my boss that all clauses in iso9k-2k should be covered, when I was preparing the internal audit plan. But I cann't find any specific words for this requirement. Any comment on it?

All

Clause 8.2.2
"... to determine wheter the quality ... a) ... to the requirements of this International Standard ..."

I think this means ALL the requirements.

Best regards,
Celso

Hi jacobin, and wecome to the Cove. :bigwave:

Clause 8.2.2 a requires you to make sure that your QMS conforms to: ...the requirements of this International Standard... and the standard consists of the clauses. It's not as bad as it sounds though. One single question can often cover a number of clauses.

Basis of Importance!

I think that it is not necessary to audit all the individual clauses and sub-clauses of ISO 9001 but broadly the rqeuirements of this International standard. The requirements could be the 5 main clauses!

BTW the fine print in clause 8.2.2 mentioned that audit programme shall be palnned, taking into consideration the status and importance of the processes and areas to be audited, as well as the results of "previous audits".

I guess if you are the first timer, you may have to cover all the clauses and QMS requirements and if your QMS has been effective since 1987, I do not think it it necesswary to cover all clauses at each and every internal audits.

If you are doing moire tha it is necessary, it could be just paperworks to satisfy your CB auditors.

Do cover all clauses and requirements of you doing for the first time!

This does not mean that ALL clauses must be audited on each audit! The expectation is that the entire QMS will be audited within the yearly plan.

And it doesn't need to be a 'yearly' plan either.

Though if this prior to the certification audit, most certification companies with want to see that a full round of internal audits have been conducted.

Thanks for all your help, every one. In fact, the question I really got confused is if the entire clauses of QMS should be audited within the yearly plan. According to the information above, I would like to take care of the entire QMS to avoid extra explanation to CB auditors.
:thanks:

Jacobin,

These folks in The Cove don't mess around; they know the answers! I've attached an example yearly audit schedule based on auditing by process. With a few minor changes, you can probably adapt it to your own organization.

Right. That reminds me of this post in the Scheduling Internal Audits thread last year:

Claes Gefvenberg said:
Considering this part of 8.2.2: An audit programme shall be planned, taking into consideration the status and importance of the processes and areas to be audited, as well as the results of previous audits.

We have taken this factor into accout earlier, when planning the audits, but we have now taken it a step further.... Starting from January this year we added a new field to our internal audit form: Date for next audit.

We agree on the date for the next audit based on the findings in the current one and the general status of the audited area.

Basic guidelines (Even though we are flexible):

A very good audit result: Next audit in 18 months.
A "normal" audit result (Whatever that is): Next audit in 12 months.
A poor audit result: Next audit in 6 months.
And if we find a real mess (a system breakdown): A follow-up audit within 1-3 months.

Thus, we now have a "self-generating schedule" where every completed audit generates a new one. (The external auditors loved the setup). The benefits are that it allows us to concentrate on problem areas at the same time as it serves as a bonus for the good ones.
