The MSDS may also be tied to the customers product as well. MSDS's may be required for pieces of hardware, product components, even the product itself like welding rod, sheet metals, paints, glues, all kinds of stuff. Endless and limitless actually.

In the end it's all as relevant.

We include the MSDSs received as part of the process for incoming goods. These are maintained in the Receiving Department and are audited internally.

The MSDSs we create for hazardous products shipped is part of the Design Process and Shipping Process.

These are the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) and are included within infrastructure 6.3 and work environment 6.4. It is up to a Company to decide what processes comprise their Quality Management System.

As usual, Randy is correct.

Of all the auditors I have dealt with (and different registrars), NOBODY has ever said that ISO 9001 requires that MSDS's are part of the standard.

All of them have agreed that they are only part of the system IF the organization defines them as part of the system OR they have an integrated system that includes 18001.

I don't have them as part of my system as this time (we are working on integrating our H & S with the 9001 system). The auditor is fine with not including them until such a time as they are integrated.

A WI for MSDS's? Yeah, try 29CFR 1910.1200 and just scroll down throught until you find Material Safety Data Sheets.

One thing though..........if you purchase material that is used as part of a compound, once it is mixed with other substances the MSDS is no longer of any use because you have an entirely different chemical. The MSDS is only good for the material/chemical as received, if it is diluted, mixed, or altered in any fashion from its original composition the MSDS is invalidated and you need an entirely new one. MSDS's are also not valid for hazardous waste under the same circumstances. Once a chemical, such as a solvent, is used it is no longer the same as it was when originally received, and has to be catagorized under the hazardous waste regulations in 40CFR as to its toxicity, flammilibity, corrosivity, or reactibility.
