I have added some options per your request. If that is not representative of your wishes, please let a moderator know.:)
Let's leave it like that as other people haven't suggested additional options.

Well.... I don't know; you tell me.:D:tg: Saying, what are you trying to suggest by the word objective? Like BevD suggested in her post, it can go many different ways.
I was reffering to objective truth.

Say you are running a restaurant and you perceive that people like the color of tablecloths you are using. Your perception is not subjective. However, you have a simple anonymous comment card that asks about the table cloth cover. You have people fill them out for six months or so and in the end 80% say they like it. Then, you have objective evidence to support your assertion.
The current view is that if 80% say like that, then that proposition should be accepted and adopted.
But since you put this question in the internal auditing forum, I am surmising that you may be asking about objective evidence during an audit.
Yes, I am interested in audit viewpoint on surveys.

Is this a survey/ interview results you are looking at that has already been accomplished, or conducting the survey/interview during the audit?
And what is the nature of the area of interest?:)
No, this is just a hypothetical question. I hope that you or other people here can indulge my curiosity.

Sorry for all the questions. We just may need to clarify what issue is being addressed here.
I think I am the one who need to say sorry.

Seems that playing the numbers game to decide if something is true or false is getting to be an accepted norm in "democratic" society. Are surveys an accepted in auditing also? If so, do you think it's absurb and exteremely dangerous?

As for interviews, of course, they are generally being practiced.
An audit is a type of survey. QMS audits, if properly done, don't look for proof of anything; they look for evidence. If an auditee claims to have an effective document control system and an auditor finds only evidence that supports the claim, it doesn't necessarily mean that the document control system is effective; it just means that on a particular day an auditor found no evidence to the contrary.

I think there is a difference between any single piece of data and the statistical population. For exaample, if the population you are studying is "weather events that support dominant climate trend perceptions," then every dry day could be taken as evidence that your climate is predominantly dry. (Unless you regard your climate as predominantly rainy in which case every dry day would be exceptional). It's like a glass half full/empty debate instead of simply saying there's a glass with 40cl of water in it.

Information can be either qualitative or quantitative.

Quantitative data usually involves something that is pretty black and white...it is or it isn't....yes or no....2 or 10. it usually involves measuring a stable item with some sort of gage.

Qualitative data is more gray. it concerns opinions and perceptions that can't be measured like a part can.

Neither is valid or invalid. both give you data, and can be used as "proof" that you're checking something.

To illustrate the absurdity of posing this as a binary decision, please answer the following question:

Have you stopped beating your wife?

[ ] Yes
[ ] No
This might need a seperate thread to hold down the voting, which might overshaddow the survey/interview thread. :sarcasm:
Or am I wrong, and there are those who want to know, and others who would honestly respond?
