Although intended for the 2008 version (but also applicable to 2015, IMHO), the Approved Interpretation by ISO/TC 176 even clarified that:

You are entitled to your opinion, but, PLEASE make sure that you do not mistake opinion with actual requirements. Most people who come here, looking for advice, like this very discussion, are seeking confirmation of the existence of requirements, not opinions.

ISO9001:2015 7.1.5 is strictly about monitoring resources and measuring resources, Not production equipment. Production equipment comes under 7.1.3.

I am sorry if I mislead people. You are correct. Let me clarify. It is not your production equipment that needs records on preventative maintenance, it is your monitoring and measuring equipment, if it is used. I made the mistake of lumping these categories together, and both Sidney and Johnny are correct.

I think I have it now. You might need to have documented evidence, but records aren't required. Makes perfect sense.

You could show an auditor that maintenance was done in other ways than documented evidence like a maintenance log. Maybe your process doc says "if the hour meter is between 48 and 50, the operator shall grease the 6 roller bearings and reset the hour meter". An auditor asks a few operators if they do any maintenance and they say "yeah, every 48-50 hours we grease the roller bearings -- here is where we keep the grease gun". Evidence, but not documented evidence.

This would apply to monitoring and measuring tools, NOT the rest of the infrastructure.
