I was interviewed for Business Process Analyst position. The interviewer was the current Business Process Analyst who is resigning.

I was expecting that I will be asked something like I will be given a specific set of circumstances and asked how I will make a positive result from them, or I will be asked to give a negative situation based from work experiences and I will be asked to detail how I overcome or resolved them.

But here's how it goes...

Q1
Interviewer: How many manuals are there in ISO 9001?

My answer: The number of manuals varies from one organization to another. In my current and previous companies we maintain one quality manual containing a) Policy Manual b) Procedure Manual c) Work Instruction Manual d) Forms Manual. Policy manual is our level 1 documentation; we also call it Quality Manual. It contains structure and policies of system including description and interaction of processes. Procedure manual, level 2, defines how the level 1 would be met. Work Instruction manual contains detailed instructions specific to a process or an operation. Forms Manual is the compilation of all forms being used across the organization to record data and information as evidence of activities performed.

Interviewer’s comment: Wrong. (Without elaborating or providing the right answers)

Q2
Interviewer: How many forms are used in an internal audit?

My answer: The number of forms varies from organization to organization. Typical forms are CPAR, Forms for Audit Plan, Audit checklist, etc. You can add if necessary. The important thing to address is the requirement of having records of internal audits.

Interviewer’s comment: Wrong. Why should I hire you? You cannot even give a correct answer.

This time I asked him, "what is the right answer?"

He (interviewer) replied: Do your home work. Are you sure you attended ISO related trainings?

I answered that I just came from ISO 9001 awareness course and Internal Audit Workshop 2 weeks ago.

Interviewer: Are you sure? Who conducted the trainings?

I replied: SGS

He did not comment instead he gave me  (roll eyes)

Q4
Interviewer: How long have you been married?

My answer: Almost 5 years.

Interviewer's follow up: How many kids do you have?

My answer: None so far.

Interviewer’s comment: You are slow.

Is it the appropriate questions to ask in an interview? Were my answers wrong? Please advice.

Whao...

That doesn't sound like a comfortable experience at all!

This is not the way to conduct an interview IMO.

What can and can not be asked during an interview depends in part upon what country you live in. Different countries have different laws.

First, the interviewer has no clue about ISO - other than his own interpretation. Second, if this was a US company, he is asking illegal questions about marital status and children. While it should be a giant red flag about the company, it is also evidence they need help from process improvement people.

Ka Pilo,
That story amazed me! Is it real?
It happened 10 hours ago. I'm still not have recovered with the below the belt question. I can take his arrogance in his ISO questions but I'm still recovering from the below the belt question.

The problem with questions like that (apart from the legality, of course) is that you were NEVER going to know what the right answer is!

Disgruntled employee, perhaps?!

What a sad and painful experience for you.

It does bring to mind an old joke, though.

Question to accountant: What is the value of Pi?

Answer: Well, what do you want it to be?

<unprofessional remark removed by Marc>
  1. Was this a company you had researched before accepting the interview?
  2. Did your research tell you it was a good company to work for?
  3. Did your research tell you that you would be able to provide value to the company?
  4. Was the interviewer of an age to retire? If not, why was he resigning?
  5. When an interviewer asks ANY question which makes you feel uncomfortable, why do you answer it?
  6. Did you have enough nerve to ask him WHY he was resigning, since you were aware he was resigning? Why not?
If you still think the company is good to work for, why don't you share with the CEO of the company the same stuff you have shared here? (If I were a worthwhile CEO, I'd want to know about interviewers dismissing worthwhile candidates, especially with a hostile attitude.)

Nearly 50 years ago, the advice columnist, Ann Landers, wrote, "No one can take advantage of you without your permission." This guy obviously was taking advantage of you. Why did you stick around for more abuse? If you did see some advantage in keeping the connection, you now have to go strengthen that connection by dealing with someone other than the jerk who raked you over the coals.
