Greetings!

I would like to ask for some help regarding on my thread title which is FAI form. I am currently working on a PLATING company which just started last December 2013. Our company is targeting an AS9100C Certification, and one of the requirements of that standard is to have an FAI. The thing is I am not familiar with FAI. I found an FAI form here in ELSMAR( I think It's a standard form), but I'm not sure if all the sections are applicable in plating company. I'm really confused. I ask my boss about it but that doesn't help. Is it possible to make my own FAI form? Can someone give me atleast an pdf or guide regarding FAI? I do have procedure, my only problem is making an FAI form that will fit plating company.

To start, the part of AS9100C that deals with First Article is 7.5.1.1, titled Production Process Verification.

"The organization shall use a representative sample of the first production run of a new part or assembly to verify that the production process, production documentation and tooling are capable of producing parts and assemblies that meet requirements. This process shall be repeated when changes occur that invalidate the original results (e.g., engineering changes, manufacturing process changes, tooling changes).

NOTE This activity is often referred to a first article inspection."

That's really pretty clear. As to the forms to use, you are free to use whatever works for you, although sometimes your customer may have a form they want used.

For further insight, there is a standard that specifically deals with First Article, AS9102. It is far more involved and robust that what AS9100C requires. You would probably benefit in reading it for insight. Keep in mind that it includes requirements that go beyond 7.5.1.1 in AS9100C, and that you only need to perform an AS9102 First Article when required by your customer (and you should charge more for doing so).

AS9102 includes forms that you might find useful even if you don''t do everything in AS9102.

I'm sure others will add to this.

My SUGGESTED methodology for example Cad Plate per QQ-P-416 Class 2, Type II:

Page 1 ? fill it out as required. This should be easy.
Page 2 ? Fill out with the supplier that provided the chemicals, Cadmium & Chromate.
Page 3 ? Pull all requirements out of the specification and list ?
Thickness = .00030?
Supplementary treatment
Cleaning
Underplating
Embrittlement Relief
ETC.

After you have confirmed all your requirements do your inspection and fill in your findings. I have never filled in an AS9102 for plating, but this is where I would start.

This is my ignorance rearing it's ugly head:

I always thought AS9100 was more geared towards manufacturing and assembly of parts. NADCAP is geared towards plating and 'finishing'.

Is/can AS9100 be good for plating and finishing? I know AS9100 is more of a management system, is NADCAP a management system?

Michael, I don?t consider either AS9100 or ISO 9001 to be a management system. They are just a tool used to evaluate your Quality management System. Nobody knows your company better than you so this makes you the best person to develop a Management System. All you have to do is ensure that the system meets the criteria of the standard.

AS9102 does indeed go farther and more in-depth than what is required by AS9100. However, don't be afraid of that form. It's three pages, it's complete, and it's not complicated at all (as alluded to by Doug). When completed correctly, I doubt you'll ever have a customer who won't be satisfied with it.

If you don't want to use it as is, though, there's no reason you can't use it as a guide to create your own form. Of course, check with your customers' requirements first. As far as I know, most - if not all - of the Tier 1s require the 9102 form.

AS9100 & ISO 9001 are both quality management systems. They involve most nearly all of the company. In my mind, the most important mission of a quality management system is to be sure that no junk is shipped. If that were the only goal, it could be met with a system that stresses heavy duty inspection, such as Mil I or Mil Q. The problem being that you can't inspect quality into a product. With Mil I or Mil Q you can only hope to catch it in a sorting exercise (inspection).

In my mind, the second most important reason for a quality management system, such as AS9100 or ISO 9001, is continual improvement. If you are continually improving, the likelihood of shipping junk is decreased. They work together, and involve the entire company, not just the inspectors.

NADCAP has an entirely different approach. NADCAP confirms that specific manufacturing processes are performed properly. Each accreditation is for a specific process, such as welding, heat treating, or welding. If you are NADCAP accredited for plating for example, NADCAP has audited that process so carefully that they feel it is highly unlikely that you will do it wrong. NADCAP is driven by the aerospace community. Using a NADCAP accredited supplier ofter costs more as you will be helping pay for the audits etc.

Neither the AS9100/ISO 9001 or the NADCAP systems are perfect, but using such suppliers improves your odds over using some that are not.
