AS9100 Rev C Clause 8.5.2 - CAR (Corrective Action Request) Format

It has been a while since my last post.

My company recently went through the Stage 2 audit and was given a nonconformity on our CAR format. As we are an automotive supplier, we always used an 8D approach. I have not had that much experience in the AS9100 and I am trying to figure this one out.

If I understand this correctly, it is a 5 step process: containment, root cause, determine action for the root cause, implementation of the root cause action, and show effectiveness of the action.

I am trying to create a CAR template for the AS9100 and performed a web search, but the only examples that I see is are more of a 8D format. Can anyone give me where I can go to see an AS9100-specific CAR template or have an example of one? At least say that I am on the right track?

There's nothing wrong with using an 8D for a corrective action in an AS9100 system. There is no AS9100 format that's required. Can you post the text of the nonconformity?

If i remember correctly my company was using a format style that was the same as the Ford 8D report, i believe that he wants my company to have its own report format, not the same as our customer.

(a) Cause
(b) Corrective action
(c) Preventing recurrence

All that is required is to meet the requirements of AS9100C Clause 8.5.2.

How you do it is up to you or whatever method you think are applicable. Note: 8D is an acceptable format.

That form would be more complete if it included "Correction" or "Containment" before the root cause.

Without seeing the nonconformance I would not venture to guess if was an appropriate nonconformance, but it smells fishy.

I do know, however, that many certification bodies have patterned their own nonconformance forms after the ANAB Heads Up 137. You may wish to visit the ANAB site and download a copy. It provides guidance on how certification bodies are to respond to nonconformances that ANAB writes against them. The audience is slightly different, but close enough to apply the concepts. Heads Up 137 pretty much follows the format your certification body suggested. It's easy to make your own form.

Well, I got some ideas in how to update my CAR form. I did some more investigation and someone was using a form that is exactly the same as a customer, which is a no-no according to our auditor.
