AS9100 Rev D and Pin Gages

Hello, I am compiling a list of my measurement gauges and I've found a Pin Gage set that was purchased through Amazon and came with a CoC. Unfortunately the CofC is dated from 2 years ago (2016) even though we just purchased the set last March, 2018.
Do I need to have these pins calibrated and receive a Long Form?

Difficult to give a direct answer, Mary. What are they used for and by whom? If used to check features which aren't checked later on (by cmm for example), there's a good chance you'll need to have them checked at some stage.

Don't freak out at the timing - once again, depending on use going 2 years isn't necessarily a problem - too many people throw money away "over-calibrating" things which should last a lot longer since they aren't used much.

You'll need to tell us more.

Hi Andy, we are using them for final inspection for Aerospace customers. Only a few are used on a regular basis.

If you have the capability, like a comparitor with a 4:1 or better resolution, I'd do a quick and dirty "verification" of size on the most used sizes. Record that as your evidence.

Do you require the gage pins to be calibrated or can they be verified by a calibrated device (measured prior to use with a micrometer)?

First, do you have a policy concerning calibration intervals? Do you have a policy concerning "in service "dates? You will need to comply with these.

If you don't have these policies, a lot will depend on the certificate. Does it have a calibration due date assigned? Does it state anything about "in service" dates. Without your own policy you should be following the OEM's.

Does the certificate actually state that this set passed calibration and the measurements are traceable to a national lab? A lot of these retail certs are certificates of conformance only, they tell you that you got what you bought.

And yes, pin gauges can and do change size with age, especially less expensive sets that do not get full treatment to stabilize their crystal structure. It usually will take more than two years, but who knows unless you verify them.

This is a very good question! I searched for a "Control of Monitoring and Measuring Devices" but we don't have one. I guess I need to write one....anyone have a template geared for AS9100 Rev D?
