Would appreciate some guidance on meeting rqmts of AS9100B, Clause 7.4.1 without going to extremes. We have a limited number of suppliers that we are pretty much forced to use by our customers. I do not want to do any extensive evaluation of suppliers. Any suggestions.

AS9100 B, 7.4.1 has several requirements, but if you are referring specifically to the one dealing with monitoring of supplier performance, use the historical data that you (and your customers) have to adjust level of product oversight, e.g., incoming inspection. That is, in addition to the criticality of the item(s) being procured.
Another question would be how to evaluate a NEW supplier, for whom, you have no past performance data yet. In most cases, an on-site visit should be in order.
One thing is to go in an inconsequential blind-date, but I would not qualify a new supplier with no "background check".

Thanks for the reply and guidance. Although my client reviews supplier performance on a continous basis, there are no formal records generated nor maintained. I hesitate to ask them to collect and create more documents. Is there another apporach?

You can be as creative as you want in your approach, but if the Standard requires a record to be maintained, there is NO WAY out.
