AS9100D Management Representative

Hi all,

This is a really dumb question but I need to ask. Our consultant is insisting that a delegation letter be generated by the company President stating that our General Manager was appointed as Management Rep. Our Quality Manual identifies the General Manager as the Management Rep along with his responsibilities.

Is a delegation letter from the President of the company really necessary? Or will I be issued a cheap nonconformity because I don't have objective evidence that the GM was appointed to this position?
I've gone through many registration audits (AS9100, ISO 9001 etc.) and this issue has never come up.

Thank you in advance for your sage advice.

:)

Just my opinion.

I believe both AS and ISO have removed the requirement to have a "designated management representative." It addresses Top Management specifically.

The AS9100D standard specifically states that a member of management shall be appointed as the management rep. I just want to know if I need objective evidence of the appointment. :)

It is a responsibility, so yes - I would think you need evidence. I don't know though, now that I think about it - If it's defined in a document like your quality manual, that should cover it.

You have stated that the GM is identified as the Management Rep in you manual. No need to support that with a letter delegating that responsible, at least in my opinion. The President/Owner signs off on the QA Manual don't they? That should be sufficient. Why create another piece of paper. :notme:

It states in our Quality Manual that the Quality Manager is the Management Representative; it also states in the Quality Manager job description that this position is the Management Representative.

Your auditor does not need a letter.

We use an org chart and it includes titles. I make sure the management rep is listed under that person's title as well. Not necessary in my opinion, but something we do for other reasons.
