AS9102 FAI Change in Material / Process Supplier

Hello,

When completing an FAI to AS9102B standards, if a change occurs with a material supplier (example: steel) does this warrant a new FAI?
Also, if there is a change in a special process supplier (example: plating), does this also mean a new FAI has to be completed?

Would a delta FAI be enough to cover these changes?.. or since it's a new material supplier will a delta not be enough since the material can have bearing on the dimensional aspect of the part?

Thank you for any help you can provide.

I personally dislike the AS9102 standard, and I am not an expert in it. However, here is my take on your question:

A delta would do.

The standard says to do a new full or partial FAI when there is "A change in manufacturing source(s), process(es), inspection method(s), location of manufacture, tooling, or materials that can potentially affect fit, form, or function."

Because 9102 is so vague and poorly written (in my opinion) IAQG has published some unofficial supporting FAQ documentation as "guidance" that states that generally the manufacturer makes the determination as to whether the change can affect form, fit, or function, but it also states that moving to a new process supplier requires a new FAI.

So....the answer to your question is definitely maybe.

If it were me, I would probably ask Engineering for their opinion about the steel (get it in writing), and do a delta for the process supplier change.

Thank you for your help! Much appreciated! I am going to go with a Delta and see if the customer is okay with that.

If both materials or processes fall under the same standard spec, a delta is fine. If the material was a custom spec, I would be more cautious and would consider the risk.
