AS9102 FAI & Lower Level Drawings - How should we perform the FAI?

Hi, question on AS9102 FAIs....

My company purchases an assembly (a kit of several components and a paper guide) and due to a mistake 5 years ago the AS9102 FAI requirement was not rolled down to suppliers in any shape or form. This means that all purchased parts and assemblies have FAIs done by my company's quality group. Fixing that is in process and a different story. Right or wrong the FAIs are being performed for purchased product at an Incoming Inspection level.

The assembly drawing in question contains only a BOM and images of the parts and how they should be packed. Drawings for each component exist and these drawings contain the critical information for each component, such as size, color, and other FFF characteristics.

Question 1- How should we perform the FAI? Are the level lower drawings "invoked" since the part numbers are listed on the BOM? Or should the lower level characteristics be rolled up to the assembly drawing?

Question 2- There are 5 configurations of this assembly kit. They vary in color only of one component. Can section 4.6E of AS9102 apply to reduce the amount of work? This section states "FAI...may be satisfied by a previously approved FAI...similiar parts"

thanks!

Question 1. How perform FAI? If you are explicitly following AS9012 Rev. B, it states (4.1 c) that "for assemblies, the assembly level FAI shall be performed on those characteristics specified on the assembly drawing.....". This also assumes that your org rolled up these important features on the lop level assembly drawing. If this is not true, you will need to drill into the assembly structure and create multiple linked FAI reports to tell the FAI story for your assembly. The design documentation and critical feature identification practice will drive your approach here.

Question 2. Multiple similar configurations. Yes, you can get by performing a "partial FAI" by identifying the baseline part number and focussing on the differences.
