AS9102 Form 1 Questions

Hi all, learning the Quality game and I was wondering if any experienced players could chip in their advice. I'm reading the AS9102 spec specifically to learn more about form 1.

1. What is the difference between a detail part and an assembly FAI? My understanding is an assembly FAI is for products that we have assembled from smaller parts/components, and the rest are detail parts. So if we receive a casting and machine it, that's a detail part. Same if we make a part from raw material and ship it to the customer.
2. If it's a detail part, listing parts in the Index list is not necessary?
3. Full FAI/Partial FAI and FAI Complete/FAI Incomplete. It seems like whenever it's a Full FAI that means it's also FAI Complete. Are there any situations where it could be Full FAI + FAI Incomplete, or Partial FAI + FAI Complete?
4. FAIR number. I'm very confused on what this represents. We've been putting 1 for everything. I don't think that can be right.

You are far from the first person to be confused by AS9102, nor will you be the last.

I am not an expert on AS9102 but here is my understanding, FWIW:

It's a detail part of no parts were assembled to make it.

Form 1 # 15-18 is not required for a detail part.

You can have a full FAI incomplete if there was a nonconforming characteristic or the customer asked you to provide the product missing something (a part that was unavailable or minus paint, etc.)

Forms 1, 2, 3 box 4 FAIR number is a reference number you create. Mine are all unique.

Thank you Mike I appreciate the help. We don't serialize our reports and in the FAIR column for assemblies we've been "1" for every component. I figured that cannot possibly be right.

One last question, we've been using the AS9102 forms to describe a manufacturing lot, while the standard itself seems to imply that you should be using them to describe an individual piece. For example in 3. Serial Number, we put the lot number. Does that seem like an appropriate way to use it? Thank you.

You are to use the s/n of the individual part that you selected to measure as your first article.

FAIR = First Article Inspection "Report". This would/ should distinguish it from the one you did yesterday and the one you did 5 years ago. It can be sequential or anything you want it to be by including the year for instance, but build a log and keep it simple.

As far as for the difference between Detail and Assembly, Assembly is the collection of all the Detail Parts that go into making that upper assembly.

As for Partial vs Full, the simplest way to describe what a Partial is, is when there is a change to a drawing, a process, or a change which could affect form, fit, and function of the part, or if a previous FAIR had a Non-Con associated with it, to close that CA. This would be an "addendum" to the original Full.

For every part that requires an FAI, there are sometimes pages and pages and for every A/C ever built, there are mountains of paperwork that goes with it, sometimes out weighing the A/C.

Get into First Part Qual on new manufacturing and there is even more paperwork. The Military has SDRLs and SSOWs. Through in a few Initial Production Evaluation (IPE)s and several Destruct Tests and you will go bonkers.

Be thankful if you are only required to do a FAIR!
