AS9102 Handwritten Revisions on Ballooned Drawing

Older component, first time we have purchased the part. Customer drawing flowed down to supplier has hand written revisions that do not reference an ECO . My initial reaction was to reject the FAI and tell the customer to officially revise the drawing. Customer is pushing back. Advice?

Don't know what FAI is but if this is the first drawing of it you have received then mark it "original."

You might then consider going back to your customer seeking a clarification that that drawing is the one they want you to proceed with. Once your customer indicates that they want you to proceed with the drawing then document the communications and go ahead.

If you have previously been told by your customer not to accept or proceed with any drawing that is not traceable via an ECO then your push back is correct.

Bottom line? Don't proceed with a drawing that has not been approved by the customer.

What are the instructions on the purchase order?

That is the primary document that should have been reviewed during contract review - is this a prototype?

Your customer provided you with a drawing, and you want to tell him it is NFG? Do you have too many customers right now?

The OP needs to clarify his question. He's using "the supplier" in the third person, so it's not clear if he's referring to his own company as the supplier or some other entity.

If he's saying that his customer gave him a marked-up print without what he considers to be proper control or attribution for the markups, he is probably correct in being concerned about it. I have personally seen instances where product was made to marked-up drawings and the markups turned out to be wrong, and the customer claimed that the person who did the markup wasn't authorized. It can get ugly.

The customer is not always right. Sometimes they need to be led to water (with tact). If they refuse to drink, there needs to be some evidence that they're OK with the drawing in the state that it was provided.

Oh, I agree. But he said the customer is pushing back. I interpret that to mean the customer has said “yes, use this drawing”, and he is still not satisfied.

I agree that at some point we do need to give the customer what they want, even if what they want is wrong. Demanding an ECO from a customer after they've told you to use what you've been given (assuming all else is as it should be and properly documented) is probably not a good idea. We might be victims of a customer's document control system, but we're not the owners of it.

I think the answers given so far cover all that is necessary for OP to proceed.

  1. Written affirmation from the customer that the drawing provided is what it wants is sufficient documentation to proceed.
  2. First Article Inspection in AS is a specific process - ensure it is followed and documented.
  3. I would include copy of the marked up drawing AND the written affirmation with the FAI paperwork.
