We purchased a new pair of outside micrometer recently. The micrometers measure from 1 to 2-in and have a resolution of 0.001-in. According to ASME B89.1.13 the maximum permissible error for a 1-in range is +/-0.00010 inches. How can I meet this tolerance if I can't resolve the measurement to that degree? All our other micrometer have a resolution of 0.0001-in and so can meet the requirements of B89.1.13; B89.1.13 has always been the standard I used to determine if micrometers are acceptable for use (as the tolerance stated is adequate for our purposes). This new micrometer is for a different purpose where +/-0.0001 accuracy is not need but does that mean I can't state that it meets B89.1.13?
Any insight to this conundrum would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Tessa
