ASME NQA-1 and Interface Control

I What I am seeing is that some customers are looking for the additional confidence of an NQA-1 program because the supplier may be doing more than just supplying material such as altering the material properties, e.g., heat treatment, etc. As a provider of speciality materials my guess is that your be a Material Manufacturer and therefore the more stringent NQA-1 requirements would apply.

OK, when I follow you describtion of material "Supplier" or "Manufacturer", we are a manufacturer, because be buy or get from our customer steel parts, which we heat treat and make a coat welding or for some special parts joint weldings. So the part have different characteristiks for the hardness afterwards.

For this I must follow NQA-1, so no NCA 3800 needed?

Regards,

TamTom

I'm sorry maybe some of the questions wouldn't be needed, but so far I have not yet a copy o the NCA 3800.

Did someone know the internetpage engineeringsky.com? They offering the ASME Codes for far to low prices, so I suspect, that I get what I want but offering my credit card data.

Norm, I have a question for you. You have stated a few times that NCA-3800 is like an NQA-1 light. But, if that is so, then why is it that you cannot just proclaim compliance but have to spend $75,000 to get audited and certified to NCA-3800, whereas NQA-1 you don't? The more I know about nuclear work, the more confused I become.:notme:

Another great question and not one with a clear answer. With an NCA 3800 QSC the buyer does not have to audit the facility because of the credibility of the certificate, although many do anyways - better to be safe than sorry. NQA-1 is still going to be costly to implement whether the costs are internal or external, but the down side is every customer is going to have to audit you in order to put you on their supplier list (some exception for firms on lists such as NUPIC and of course N-Stamp providers). Our implementations have run from $20K to $60K for external costs. The lower the external cost the more the internal costs. For small to mid-size companies size does make some difference. Everyone has to do roughly the same amount of work.

I will tell you that at ASME HQ there are serious rumblings about NQA-1 certifications like ISO. I have reservations. As a committee member I'll be watching that one closely.

TamTom, yes you win a trip down the NQA-1 path! Welcome. Regarding the link. The prices are very questionable. Sent a note to ASME HQ to get a read. If I hear back, I'll post a response. Anyone else know this group. The site doesn't say much. I like the prices, but suspect it's not affiliated with ASME>

True that ASME Section III does not require an audit when you have a certificate.
But going back to the NRC's acceptance of ASME Certificates in 1986 the information notice 86-21 the NRC said that the certificate was good for the programmatic aspects of the program but you still need to "verify implementation" of the certificate. There are various ways that this can be performed an audit is one of those ways.
