Report from the Joint Conference
Folks,
I'm not sure this is the right forum list.....I didn't see one that seem to fit any better, so please do forgive me. Marc, feel free to relocate as appropriate.
Of particular note is the information regarding the Education Day. I do not know for sure about quality (our uptown cousins), but metrology will be losing much of the workforce in the next 10 years or so. I was of course hoping to plant the seed to develop the next generation of Metrologists.
Keep watch, next year's conference call for papers is expected to be out not later than mid-January.
The American Society for Quality (ASQ) Inspection and Measurement Quality divisions held a joint conference September 23 and 24, 2004. The joint conference was held at the Heath, Ohio conference facility operated and hosted by Boeing and Bionetics.
An Education Day was held on September 22. A cooperative effort by the joint conference, Bionetics, the U.S. Air Force, and the Licking County Board of Education resulted in participation by three area high schools. Personnel who were key in arranging and conducting the Education Day included Barbara Bonnell of the Licking County Board of Education, Charlie Mays of Bionetics, SMSGT Riddel of the U.S. Air Force, and Hershal C. Brewer, CCT, of the International Accreditation Service, Inc. (IAS).
This is believed to be the first education day of its type to be conducted by a metrology or inspection conference.
Students from Utica, Johnstown, and Granville high schools are in advanced programs of mathematics and physics. The students learned how advanced mathematics and physics work together to accomplish everyday activities, even something as simple as listening to their favorite radio station. During the presentation the students were involved and participated in calculations and discussion. After the presentation, two students who had assisted in conducting the presentation, Paul Paslay from Utica and Katie Brobeck from Johnstown were provided with a token of appreciation known as “PMEL Coins” by SMSGT Riddel. The teachers, Mrs. Sandra Coe of Utica, Mr. Brian Nelson of Johnstown, and Mr. Mike Bait of Granville also received PMEL coins for their support of the Education Day. Charlie Mays of Bionetics led the group of students and educators on a tour of the U.S. Air Force Primary Standards Laboratory, located at the Heath facility. The Air Force Primary Standards Laboratory provides high level calibration support to Air Force calibration laboratories located around the world.
A total of 16 students were present for Education Day. The students from Utica were: Jake Miller, Miranda Roderick, and Paul Paslay. The students from Johnstown were: Kyle Ponchak and Katie Brobeck. The students from Granville were: Katie Thornborough, Alicia Klinefelter, Barry Westmoreland, Jacob Doran, Beth Greaves, Katie Steensen, Andrew Lossing, Thomas Sisson, Jack Duffus, Garrick Asplund, and David Funk.
A parting note........I gave the presentation showing how advanced mathematics and physics are required just to listen to a radio station! It is truly simple.........but most folks have not made the connections to see it.
The ID/MQD Joint Conference 2005 will also have an Education Day......and is expected to be held in the So Cal area........
