Assigning yourself more power and authority.

Some of us have the opportunity to basically create a position of serious authority for ourselves, especially when coming into a company with the purpose of creating a quality management system from nothing, as I am doing now.

This thought just occurred to me as I am writing the CAPA process.
I basically made myself the ultimate final say in the corrective action process by stating that I must approve all corrective actions after verification.
And I know this will go unchallenged because my reason for doing this is to get the owner out of the "I MUST APPROVE EVERYTHING" loop so he can sell and design more product.
But there is a little devil on my shoulder rubbing his hands and saying "heh heh heh, more power for me".

have you ever felt this way?

Shouldn't you include some provision for when you are sick or on vacation? Presumably, you or your supervisor (the president?) would have authority to sign off.

Be careful what you wish for. Your saying "I am the authority" doesn't necessarily confer any actual power or influence, and if you proclaim yourself the Grand Poo-bah of CAPA and your gun is bereft of bullets, all you'll accomplish is making it more difficult to have influence, which is the most potent form of power. The "secret" of effective management consists in the ability to get people to do the right thing while making them believe it was their idea. Not easy, but if it were, anyone could do it.

Good advice Jim. The "secret" is all too true.

Discordian should be very cautious about the "I MUST APPROVE EVERYTHING" owner, especially if he(the owner) has to read the procedure and approve it. Any good manager will not miss the assignment of responsibility within his organization.

It's never a good idea to bring a knife to a gun fight.

You may feel that you are gaining power, but you may just be providing the rope with which they will use to hang you.

I agree 100%.
It just kind of occurred to me while writing this procedure that a person could write himself into more authority... and responsibility whether he/she wants it or not.

And I did add a provision for another person to approve in my absence or if I choose to delegate the authority.
