ASTM E2309-05 Classification Table - Fixed to Relative Errors

I am looking into this standard to verify some things we are doing and am having a hard time to understand the classification table and how to apply the fixed error for resolution & % of reading or % of displacement and if there is some cross over from Fixed to Relative error as there is in E83.

Can someone explain it? The standard is not giving any examples and I'm having a hard time to get my head wrapped around this (maybe because it's Monday...)

For instance, I have a machine with a 0.1um resolution.
To meet class B what is the allowable +/- tolerance for displacement error at 100mm.

I am making up an excel sheet so I can just make simple inputs to get the correct allowable error for any give set point based on the class table.

I'm giving this one another 'Bump' in case someone here can help with this one. My Thanks in advance!

I reviewed this standard recently myself. The classification table basically means that at any displacement your measurement has to meet two different criteria to be classified within that class. For your example, to meet class B at 100mm your resolution, at that displacement, can not be greater than 0.5mm and the allowable error in the measurement is +/-1.0mm. For all readings from your lower limit (resolution times 200) to 7.5mm the allowable error is +/-0.075mm, above that will be +/-1.0% of displacement. The resolution has to be less than 0.038mm for all measurements 7.6mm and below and less than 0.5% of the reading over that. Simply put it is very similar to the classifications table in E83. Hope this helped.

I actually went to Gary directly (author / contact for the standard) and got pretty much the same answer.
For what ever reason I could not wrap my head around that one... I understand E83 quite well but with the absence of a gauge length I was kind of stumped how to put the math together... I am making up a little excel sheet to give tolerances based on the variables and classifications for our field techs to use and getting it right the first time is the best way.
Thanks for the answer and help with this.

OK guys, maybe I misread.

We have 100mm total, 0.1micrometer resolution. Exactly WHAT is being used for this measurement?

What is the uncertainty?

Is this in the field or in a higher level lab?

Help me out here.
