Hello tomjess,

Ideally at the start of a new organization. In an existing organization, you could begin considering applying Lean Manufacturing Principles when a new product or program is introduced (See: ISO 9001:2000, Clause 7.1 Planning of product realization). You could also do an in-depth assessment of an existing manufacturing process to find out where non-value added activities occur.

There are may threads here at The Cove about Lean Manufacturing Principles.
You'll see, the whole world is ready to lend you a hand.....

Enjoy learning here....

What Lean is not:
Is not a workforce reduction program
Is not a "work harder" program
Is not a description of staffing levels
Is not a "Flavor of the Month"
Lean is a culture -- Banish wastes and create wealth.

This is a curious question. "At what stage in a company's life can you introduce Lean Manufacturing Principles?"

When can you introduce the Toyota Production System? When the company is still in some guys garage inventing a product that will be sold and turned into the first product of a new company. That guy could use almost all of the lean manufacturing principles. That early is absolutely ideal.

The best stage to introduce these principles is infancy. The earlier in a companies development the easier the introduction will be. If a new company is born with the principles already inherent in their process, then lean culture will never have to be developed. If you build a process with virtually no excess waste and start by flowing your products well, the rest is continually improving that process.

An old company with well established processes will have to deal with the waste involved in changing thos processes.

If you have a young company, start now.

There's no stage like the present stage.

It has less to do with a life cycle than the culture of the leadership.
Well put.

The theoretical ideal stage is never the best practical stage because in an ideal condition, people just refuse or are just too scared to change. In fact the most practical stage for a successful change is when a company is facing some kind of crisis, where everybody realised that you either change with the hope of still controlling the situation or 'be changed' and let others control your fate.

Hi:
Thanks for all the postings on "the timing for introducing lean".
Can someone throw light on the issues in introducing lean in a company that is over 25 years old and has too much of pressure to deliver at present.
Can anyone enlighten me?
