I have some questions about Attribute Measurement System.

1. I want to know what is the definition of Attribute Measurement System.
Note: I haven't the English version MSA Manual. I come from China.:)

2. Where does Attribute Measurement System apply?

3. For Attribute GR&R of visual quality inspection, What is the assess criteria?
The %Score vs. Attribute need to >90%? or the Screen % Effective Score vs Attribute>80%?

Any input will be highlighted appreciated. Thanks!:thanx:

There are people here in the US who think the MSA manual is written in Chinese :D. "Attributes" are characteristics for which acceptance criteria are based on simple good/not good, or go/no go decisions, as opposed to variables, for which actual measurement values form the acceptance criteria.

2. Where does Attribute Measurement System apply?
See the answer to #1. One example of an attributes measurement system is use of thread gages to verify screw threads, or threaded holes.

3. For Attribute GR&R of visual quality inspection, What is the assess criteria?
The %Score vs. Attribute need to >90%? or the Screen % Effective Score vs Attribute>80%?
The acceptance criteria will depend on the risk involved, customer requirements, or both. Generally speaking, it's expected that an attributes gage will always differentiate between "good" and "bad" parts. When there are subjective visual criteria, GR&R is not appropriate. In order for GR&R to be useful, the acceptance criteria must be objective.

OK let's anwer 1 by 1:
1. Attribute Measurement System is also known as Assesement Agreement Analysis. It is a study of whether 2 or more appraisers are given sets of items will agree each other with thier judgment of GO/NO, or PASS/FAIL. Usually appraisers are given 2 or more trials.

2. Mostly during inspection where judgment is by attribute data (go/no go; pass/fail; small/medium/large) and measurement is not used.

3. Depends on the criticality of your product. Ours is 95% sine there is a relability issue involved.

BTW, Our company is a PCB manufactory.
I would like to set up the standard procedure for Attribute GR&R in our company.

What is the mean of 95%? It is %Appraiser? %Score vs.Attribute? Screen %Effective Score? Screen %Effective Score vs. Attribute?

If I have a automatic visual inspection, but it does not sent any numerical data, It criticizes as go no go test.

Pass or fail, is Attribute studies the right method to evaluate our measurement system?

I think so. The score also should be 100% for automatic visual inspection machine.

I think a more effective mathod to evaluate a vision system is by Machine verification.
If you have an automated inspection system for PCB, you may want to verify the capability of the machine to recognize by putting thru test boards which have actual units that are good, marginal and defectives and see if the equipment is able to detect appropriately. It would be far more effective then using an attribute GR&R. I believe that the attribut GR&R was originally intended to help determine inspection consistency and accuracy between 'human inspectors' who perform a 'gaging' function.

the "Attribute Gage R&R" approach was designed for any 'judgement system' that categorized results as opposed to a system that returns continuous measurement data. This includes human visual inspection and machine vision systems.

If you cannot get continuous data (which would be unusual for a vision system), the attribute approach is appropriate.
