Audit Segregation by Product - ISO 9001 & AS 9100 in a small machine (job) shop

Hello Expert Friends!

Question! My company is a small machine (job) shop w/ approx. 45 employees. We make commercial products and aerospace/defense products. Our defense customer at first was mandating ISO 9001 registration, so that is what I have been working on. Recently they said we should go straight to AS9100. My question is! Since we will basically be audited to the 9001 standard while also being audited to the AS standard, can we let our commercial products be audited only to ISO 9001 and our aerospace/defense parts fall into the additional AS requirement. There are several additional items in the AS9100 standard that are not required by PO and really would not benefit from the additional requirements? Our shop is under one roof with no separate facilities for the commercial or aerospace work. Most of our aerospace work is however completed primarily on three or four machines due to complexity. Any help out there?:thanks:

Re: ISO 9001 & AS 9100 in the same shop

:bigwave: This describes us as well - we have 65 employees and we make stuff for many different industries.

I agree.

Yes. That is exactly what we do. We just had our AS9100 registration audit at the end of September and the auditor looked at non-aerospace work and aerospace work. A lot of the AS9100 additional requirements (the bold text) will apply to both, but many of them don't (First Article Inspection, for example). What we do is clearly identify on the router what is aerospace/defense and what is not.

Thanks Cari!

Could you give me some examples of where AS applies to both in your Org.?

yes, go for the AS9100, and let the auditor know when he is looking at product other than aerospace. Your certificate will indicate both AS9100B and ISO9001:2000!
We just received our certificate this week.
PHEW!

Congratulations!!:applause:

I had a few minor nonconformances so I just submitted my corrective actions to our auditor - they did not require on-site verification. If the corrective actions are approved we'll have our certificate in a few weeks.:cfingers:

Thank you, and congratulations to you as well. I had 13 NC's, 2 of which were majors, requiring on-site. In all, it took from June 26-30 (audit) to Oct 24 (certificate presentation), but the delay was that our auditing company was waiting for accreditation from ANAB based on our audit. Our audit included a witness of our auditor by ANAB!

Our company is also a company that deals with aerospace and non-aerospace products. Yet we did not make a diversification on how we control the various products. I think if you control aerospace requirements via procedures or separate clauses into your procedures you do not need to seperate your system. Just highlight for example that you use different traceability methods and plan it via traveller.
