The department where I currently work is, at the moment, fragmented (don't ask - it was like that when I came here a year ago and I'm working toward 1 all-encompassing QMS). We have 2 different 3rd party auditors and, as I now know them both, am aware that a sandwich, drink and dessert from the canteen is perfectly adequate (paid for by us, by the way).
The first organisation I worked for (quite a few years ago now, sadly) were audited by a guy nearing retirement. The factory was situated on the edge of a lodge with a really nice quintessential English village pub just a stones throw away. The auditor preferred to dine there - understandably so as the food was excellent. What used to rile me, however, was that he'd pretty much 'kick back' for a couple of hours and really take his time over lunch. With the naivety of youth (I was around 20-21 at the time) I didn't say anything (I certainly would now) but this really used to hack me off. We were paying good money for this service. I didn't want to see an auditor chilling out with a nice lunch for a couple of hours - I wanted to see him in the plant, identifying areas for improvment and imparting his wisdom to me in order to impress upon management the importance of the work he was carrying out. As it stood, the exact opposite occurred - the management team (who weren't the most forward thinking people around) saw what he did and it helped reinforce their opinion that quality didn't particularly matter that much.
As a result, I prefer relatively quick lunches and getting back to the task in hand. Any assessor who doesn't agree will be told in no uncertain terms. I'm (or, rather, the organisation who I work for) not paying someone to come in and have a jolly - I want something more than a clean 'pass sheet' from these audits.
