AWS Certified Weld Inspector (CWI) Requirement Question

We are looking at adding a CWI position, we plan to hire from within and I am trying to decipher the qualifying education requirement. Can anyone help me with this? AWS requires minimum work experience, ranging from 3 years to 12 years depending on other qualifications. My question is, "what is work experience"? Is it specifically welding, or working within manufacturing, or similar?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you very much.

Directly from the standard B5.1:

5.1.1 Shall be a high school graduate, or hold a state
or military approved high school equivalency diploma
(e.g., GED).
5.1.2 Shall have a minimum of two years experience
in an occupational function with a direct relationship to
weldments fabricated to national or international standards
and directly involved
in one or more of the areas
listed under 5.5.
And

5.5 Qualifying Experience. Candidates shall submit
verifiable documentation of experience in an occupational
function with a direct relationship to weldments
fabricated to national or international standards and directly
involved in
:
I didn't re-create the whole thing, just some of the relevant parts. Seems to me that there must be direct involvement with welding, welding developemnt or welding results (Documentaton of welding, supervision of welding, welding or welding QC). Not just anyone from production is qualified.

And, there has to be documentation to the fact that there has been a relationship of the job and welding - such as my husband was a documented welder (job description) and had gotten several welding certs before training for CWI.

Your best bet is to contact AWS directly, since you are adding a CWI position, they will need to certify through AWS. You might find it easier and cheaper to hire someone from the outside who is already CWI certified, then if you want in house hires for additional positions, you will already have a CWI who can certify CAWI (Certified Associate Welding Inspectors).
Your welders also have to certify to the AWS requirements and code they weld to, and that will require the skills of a CWI to certify the welders to be able to weld at the AWS code.
Check out the AWS Website as well as ASW D1.1 Structural Welding code and any other codes your facility welds to. CWI is NOT an easy certification to obtain, but is an invaluable asset for any AWS weld facility. Finding someone "In House" to hire for this position, may be quite a challenge and very expensive, because it is a lengthy test and if you send this "new Hire" to take the test, and they fail, you get to spend all that money again.
Not to be rude, but maybe you don't understand what it is you are asking here. CWI is a big step for anyone in the welding field.
As a former CAWI, I spent a lot of time certifying welders (Bend Test on Pipe) with a CWI, and their skills are worth every penny and don't get me started on NDT folks, those guys amaze me. Go for the already certified guy, you'll be glad you did.

Sorry, I noticed a Typo... I meant AWS D1.1 not ASW.

I also did not reference AWS QC1 which I assume you already have and that is why you were asking the questions.

I had completed SMAW – Stick Plate Mild Steel welding course last december. It was a wonderful experience for me.Now I got a job and I am earning more than C$20 for my one hour work.I got this job only because of the value of my AWS certification. We know that AWS is an internationally recognized welding standard mandated in the USA.So I strongly believe in the reputation of certification Providers. You must check whether the certificate you are provided from them has any legal value.I think better you consult a lawyer for ensuring the fact.Nowadays many private institutions are providing certification that has no value at all.So be aware of such fake certificate providers.
