Ice Storm Wednesday, with intermittent power outages.

More Ice Thursday, with complete loss of power

Earthquake Friday night (only heard and felt it, drove the dogs crazy).

Subsisted on food going bad in the fridge, cooked on a gas grill out back. Fortunately the gas log in the living room gave off enough heat to keep the central part of the house warm.

Removed downed branches from the front yard, still have a lot in the back yard to do.

Just got back power.

Bummer. I just read about the earthquake. Well, the days are getting longer and summer will soon be here.

Been there done that! Back in the Great Ice Storm of 1997-1998 (it happened right at the end of the year).

My heart is with you. It is SO depressing to drive home through miles of dark neighborhoods, knowing that when I get there I must start with a cold wood stove, cook dinner for my family on said wood cook stove (picture here, it kept us home) and deal with my children whining that they were bored and tired of the dark and cold.

Meteorologists have said we should expect more of these absurd weather patterns in the future, because ocean warming is tweaking the trade winds that in turn drives arctic air too far south. Sorry, maybe that belonged on the Controversial forum... :(

We aren't using it in our current house because we don't have adequate clearances, but we intend to keep this cook stove in anticipation of further weather upsets.

I'm in the UK and the weather is unusual here too. People have been flooded and without power since before Christmas! Our government is a disgrace.

I do understand your weather is a lot more extreme than ours.
I hope you all remain safe.

Up here in Michigan, weather-related power failures and tree damage are more common occurrences.

A fair number of people have generators and can power critical functions, or if they've additionally installed the necessary electrical preparations, their whole house. I haven't sprung for a natural gas generator...the luxury approach...but I do have a primary and a backup gasoline generator, and battery backup lighting, and an emergency-backup sump pump that can be run by a long cable from an idling car in the driveway. And, a lot of people have chainsaws and the like.

Sounds like it's been a rough winter all over....
I guess overall - we in southern Ohio have been pretty lucky - even though Our winter has been pretty harsh too.

Glad to hear things are getting back to normal Steve...

Can't wait for spring to get here....

Roger that. We have a small generator - had a smaller one that my husband used for his camp but last summer he traded it in for a model large enough to do what's really important: power the coffee maker. :D Once the coffee is ready the generator will run the refrigerator, livingroom TV and DVD player/cable box, and one curly light bulb. Over Christmas when the power was out, that was enough. My daughter and I watched at least half my library, it seems... When we move - we are buying a house in the Conway SC area - we're keeping the little generator and were careful to buy a house with a floor plan that would accommodate that wood cook stove. I feel sure we'll need it again. At least down there we'll have running water when the lights go out.

10C/50F here today with a big yellow thing in the sky. What's that?
Gorgeous day, just like spring.
It's not going to last though.

Most people here don't have generators, so most of us are completely unprepared for power outages.

I would have thought that with these kinds of events being a known hazard a little bit of prepping would become part of the management plan for the people in the US. Just a thought.

These kinds of things aren't considered known hazards in most of the U.S. Not at present, anyway.
