Ballooning a Print (Drawing) - A correct way to do a "bubble" print for a PPAP

Re: Numbering print - A correct way to do a "bubble" print for a PPAP

No one has a macro to auto number a circle to just paste a number on the print? In a pic file, or excel even?

Instead of this old plastic template and then scan it in to have a ballooned print on file.

If we made the print I could talk to the cad guys to add it.

As was mentioned, don't forget ALL the notes, many quality disasters start by something missed there.

Most CAD software has the ability to add bubbles automatically, if it is your drawing, you might want to stand your drafter to a beer. Even if it is a customer print, if you have it electronically, again a beer or two could save <you> a lot of time. I think some CAD software will even generate a file from the bubbles for your layout report...

Good luck with PPAP, the big trick is not to over think it too much, just do what it asks, no more, no less.

No cad, but we have scanned it in so if I had a nice little macro to add a number to a circle + 1 every time I clicked a spot on a pic I would be oh so happy. :biglaugh:

I was thinking it would not be hard for a macro writer to do sumin in excel maybe.

Re: Numbering print - A correct way to do a "bubble" print for a PPAP

Anyone make progress with this? We're a job shop that needs FAI's on most of our parts. Workflow generally goes:

Receive print via web (PDF or Tiff)
Open Excel master document with 70 numbers in circles on the left margin
Move bubbles to each dimension and note, going CW consecutively
Delete extra bubbles
Open FAI spreadsheet
Type in each measurement, feature control box, note, etc. that corresponds to each number in the drawing.

Is there an easier way? I like the idea of turning on a macro, and having a numbered circle get inserted at that point consecutively. An improvement to that would be if the numbers had logic - i.e. they're always +1 from the previous bubble. This way if a drawing gets rev'd, I can insert a bubble and everything else adjusts. Ultimate would be if I could drag a box over the drawing feature (dimension, gd&t box, note), a bubble number gets inserted, and the information in that box gets OCR'd and put into our FAI spreadsheet. Re-typing gets tedious...

We itemize engineering drawings 1 of 2 ways at our company. We work with large parts, i.e. 560 in long panels, over several, i.e. 4, J size sheets.

Option 1: We identify what category a dimension is by what tool will measure it as in a radius gage, pair of calipers etc. Then we start at one end of the part or 1 side of the part and number the dimensions along the part so that all the dimensions are in numerical order across the engineering drawing, starting at the lowest zone and sheet number, typically the lower right hand corner of the print then working upwards and left.

Option 2: We number the engineering drawing from right to left, regardless of the tool used. This method works well especially if dimensions are compounded as in laying out 1 dimension in order to know where to measure the thickness of a tapered pad.

On a view part, every company I've ever worked at started with the material call out first (because its silly to inspect it if its the wrong material.) then views in upper left and then went clockwise and then notes last.

On a single view part we start with the material call out first (because its still silly to inspect it if its the wrong material.:biglaugh:) and then start at 12 o'clock and then number clockwise with the notes done last.

Could someone post a ballooning drawing? I don't think I really have understood the meaning and purpose of it. Maybe it's because our drawings are extremely simple.

There is ballooning software out there that works pretty good.

go on line and check out http://www.discussoftware.com

Their product works pretty good

By the way, the reason for numbering is to build a complete list of ALL measurable design characterisitics to make sure that ALL of the characteristics are accounted for. In the old days it used to be called Character Accountability and Verification.

The best way is to start by numbering the print and specs and developing a list of all requirements. As the process is developed you can check off each requirement as it is incorporated in the process and measured.
At the end of this process every item should have a value. If something does not have a result it needs to be evaluated and "accounted" for.

Good Luck

Give me about 10 years and you'll have it.
