If you are using a zebra printer the "zebra designer 2" software will generate barcodes for you, this is freely available on the zebra website and it a good place to start. The software is limited in functionality and it is a bit of a faff to set up as you will either need to setup a label for each product or enter details multiple times. There are many barcoding software programs out there that use databases to store the information to make generating the labels and barcodes easier.
GS1 are the issuing authority and repository for the global trade item numbers (GTIN) you generate, what you do with the number is up to you. Personally i do not find GS1 good value for money when it comes to generating barcode images, there are other and better ways of doing this.
