Basic Internal Calibration Procedure to check the Accuracy of a Balance

Does anyone have a Procedure for using 'test' weights to internally check the accuracy of a balance? We have had our 'test' weights calibrated yesterday but we do not yet have a procedure. We are only after something simple, looking at doing the internal check each Monday. Thank you in advance.

What does testing the low weight and high weights achieve? Wouldn't you be repeating the same sensitivity test twice? As long as the weight has a mass equal (or as close as you can get) to the nominal capacity of the weighing instrument.

I understand that a 2pt check would be measuring nonlinearity of the instrument but wouldn't that property be covered during sufficient frequency through calibration and maintenance.

I'm curious if most members use a 1pt or 2pt verification checks on their balances.

Well... just my :2cents:

Obviously in business each seeks the path of least resistance; the easiest and fastest. However... one must also perform that which is needed.

Prior to verifying the balance, are there internal weights for the balance? Is the balance internally calibrated prior to use?




To verify a balance,
  • Verify previous performance. Is there excessive drift? Is this balance being adjusted a lot?
  • Verify proper installation. The balance should be leveled, and vibration/draft free.
  • Verify weights to be used. They should be within current calibration, be a complete set, and should be handled properly. The weights should be checked for contamination. If contaminated, they should be appropriately cleaned. If they are heavily contaminated, they may need to be verified if they are still within tolerance.
  • Next, determine the use of the balance. This would include verifying the use range of the balance. Also, determine the surface area used during weighing.
  • Using the weights, verify across the use range. Also, if a large surface area is used on the weigh pan, corner load verification should be performed.
  • Document the results accordingly.
Important is to 1) verify the balance for the weighing operation to be performed, and 2) verify if the balance is drifting. The full calibration should involve not only the above, but verifying the accuracy of the internal calibration weight.

The procedure noted from google is okay for a scale, but typically for a precision balance, there are several parameters that are verified:
1. zero
2. linearity
3. eccentricity
4. repeatability
5. hysteresis
6. span

and if required, minimal sample weight (USP41) and measurement uncertainty of the calibration.
