What if automakers measured gas mileage by rolling their cars downhill with their engines idling? They might, Newsweek's Daniel Lyons suggests, if they took inspiration from the MobileMark 2007 notebook battery-life benchmark test, the creation of a consortium called BAPCo, whose members are - surprise - computer makers and other tech companies. Laptops score big numbers, Lyons explains, because they're tested with screens dimmed to 20%-30% of full brightness, Wi-Fi turned off, and the main processor chip running at 7.5% of capacity. Professional reviewers see company-generated battery-life claims as a joke. 'The rule of thumb is that in real-world use you get about 50 percent of rated battery life,' says a Gizmodo associate editor. Leading the call for reform is the not-necessarily-altruistic AMD, who gripes that MM07 was created in Intel's labs and rigged so Intel chips would outscore AMD chips, which draw more power when idle.

Does your computer (or other device) get the battery life as advertised, and if so, for how long (knowing that with time battery life decreases)?

From my experience - Almost all brands of laptops/notebooks claimed that their batteries will last for 3hr+ for the normal batteries but when used, you get about 2hr+ (about 60%-70%). Six months down the road, you may be left with less.

Mark,

You are closer than you might think ref automotive manufacturers!

Most emissions and mileage figures are obtained from rolling roads. The usual "trick" is to disconnect all "auxilliary" services from the power-plant and run them from outside power sources.

I have a three-year-old Dell XPS M140 that came with a six-cell battery. I don't recall what Dell said about battery life because I knew whatever they said wasn't accurate. Out of the box it was set to dim the screen when on battery power, and I changed that. It's good for about two hours. Dell wanted $175 for a nine-cell battery, and I got one on eBay for $50. The big battery will go for about 3.5 hours. I haven't noticed any deterioration of battery life yet.
