Benefits of Corporate Office ISO 14001 Certification

I have been asked by some of my students (and a very nice client organization) a serious question about certification to ISO 14001 and the benefits that could be realized by a corporate office that already has their 17 manufacturing facilities certified.

The corporate office is typical in not having hazardous materials or any manufacturing processes at its location. The folks are struggling to find any real value from the certification of the office.

Give us some feedback.

BTW...I am also showing them how the Cove operates by asking this question.

This is my opinion that these are some of the benefits (I do not claim to be an expert in 14001):

1. To show unification of the Corporation/Organization
2. Reduce waste (paper reduction and so forth)
3. To reduce consumption of consumables (electric, water etc)

These are just some that I can think of, that may help or not.

Just a couple of weeks ago (due in large part to champions within the environmental system) we started recycling different kinds of paper, aluminum, plastic, etc. I am amazed at how much stuff gets accumulated in a day.

If the approach is within some level of corporate responsibility, there is a huge amount of good that can come from office employees contributing also.

Economic payback could be accumulated through reduction of styrofoam cups, energy efficient lights, and minimizing excess use of computers, lights, and other power sources. While they sound like "good ideas", most of the time they stay "good ideas" unless initiated through an effort like 14001, IMHO.

Dear Randy,

In general business opportunities are increased and risks are reduced if the corporate office establishes an ISO-14001 system; of course, the focus has to be on strategic issues rather than on "resources" used in the office. I find that such a system ensures that environmental issues are on the agenda of the top management of the orgaization and demonstrates the commitment to improving environmental performance to the stakeholders.

Please see if the attached sample of aspects / impacts assessment of the CEO activities of the Corporate Office is of use to take this subject forward. The activities and aspects were, in general, derived from the EFQM-CSR model. The forms were indeed filled by the CEO himself, with some assistance from me. If you are interested I shall share similar documents for other functions of the corporate office.

The corporate office indeed was ISO-14001 certified till a year ago; we had gone through at least one renewal of the certificate (i.e. at least the system was maintained for about six years). For administrative reasons the system has been replaced by an internal arrangement, expanding the scope to Sustainability.

They have a corporate mandate that all their manufacturing facilities carry both 9001 and 14001 registration (we are the CB, but I cannot be an auditor because I have been doing their auditor training and such....COI and all that). Anyway the headquarters folks are seriously considering meeting the same requirements for certification they place on their downlines.

I have been doing an auditor class all week and this question came up off-line, so I figured what the heck, lets take it to the world for input. When I told them of and showed them the Cove I figured this would be a great way to demonstrate the cooperative global impact this place has on this type of subject.

Actual bennies aside, just the commitment and willingness to do what they have mandated their divisions to do should bring about a significant "feel good" quotient amongst the workforce. Remember that whole commitment of management thing? Then, as said earlier, there will be plenty of things that the corporate offices will find that can save money and minimize waste. It may not be as significant as the production areas, but it will be noticable by the corporate employees, and it may help them to take some of the lessons learned home to instill the culture with their families. (if they don't want to go the actual certification route, let them implement the system and allow each division to come in and audit showing good faith and commitment.)

I would be in favor. I have long suggested that Corp offices should be certified to ISO 9001 (they can't have TS themselves). So, I would apply the same logic to ISO 14001 - good for the goose...etc.

It would not cost that much and make a more level playing field. Might even save them money, but would definitely make them more aware.

The question is whether they get any benefit from implementing an effective EMS. More later ....

The corporate office is typical in not having hazardous materials or any manufacturing processes at its location. The folks are struggling to find any real value from the certification of the office.
What they are likely to have is limited environmental aspects but significant influence. So if there is anything to demonstrate to an outside body it is that the folks at the Head Office are providing support and resources to the significant environmental aspects out in the facilities ... oh and by the way they are running a clean (and legal) ship at home.

Does this not follow the thin line of consultancy, even though you can't do the auditing yourself, but your Organization is the CB?
