looking for best engineering practices related to top assembly drawings.
Can the top level drawing contain two difference sizes of the same assembly were the differences are identified and listed in the BOM?

We do not fiddle with BOM for mentioning dimensions. Doing so might have some implication in Assembly. We predominantly use BOM for procurement planning and for us, Drawing is the one which gets transferred into sketches for Assembly station indicating size, torque and all that.

Under the scenario you specified, we use tables as a part of drawing itself. Drawing will refer some size as constant 'a' or so. Table will provide the value of 'a' depending on its parent assembly or application.

Thanks for the reply.

We do not put dimensions in the BOM. The BOM only list different parts related to the assemblies.
What I'm looking for is a engineering or drafting standard that references the use of assembly drawing that contain more the one size unit(or some other designation) such as 123456 & 123457. Something similar to -1 right side shown and -2 left side opposite. This is for a submission that a reviewer stated drawings have multiple part numbers and I need to know if this is an accepted industry practice and if so were could I find the document to reference the acceptability of this practice.

I am trying to justify referencing two sizes units on one drawing, one has a 12inch width and the other a 14inch width. Engineering referenced the two sizes on one drawing indicating in the BOM the different parts that make up the size 12 and the size 14, there are also common parts used on both assemblies.

Thanks

I have not seen this as any kind of "standard practice" in any of the industries I've worked (electronics, automotive, aerospace, musical instruments). Generally, if there are different part/assembly numbers associated with each part, then they would be found on their own drawings. That's not to say that it cannot be done, but it doesn't seem like any kind of industry standard.

Hi,

Although I can't point to any published standard, I think using a single drawing for more than one final assembly part number can be acceptable (seen it practiced), as long as there are controls in place to make sure there is no confusion as to which one is being referenced at a given point, and how to deal with it. I guess that's you reviewer's concern. Now, if they want to cite you for that, please ask them to point to the regulation or other written requirement that negates your practice. Then you will more likely be able to address it effectively.

Cheers,
Ronen.

Thanks everyone for your Insights
I've worked in a few different industries Aerospace, commercial equipment and medical device and I don't remember seeing this practice until my present company. When I first encountered this it really didn't send up any red flags as it was understandable and not confusing as the products are fairly simple in design.
I believe my main issue is the reviewer is new, Biomedical engineer 2012 attained MS 2013 and is working as a Research follow. :applause:
I will leave the drawings as is and request a reason as to why they need to be changed.

Thanks
Again
