Blacklight Cosmetic Inspections of Stainless Steel Parts

#1
Good afternoon! In an effort to met our customers' (perhaps read "customer's") tough cosmetic requirements for stainless steel parts, we are considering a separate workstation for 100% inspection under moderate magnification. A brainstorming moment gave me the idea reflected in the thread title; some preliminary searches have turned up little applicable info. Does anybody have any experience regarding:
  • the effectiveness of using UV or blacklight to inspect SS parts for nicks, bump, blemishes, or easy-to-miss cosmetic defects, or;
  • any regulatory or exposure concerns concerning the same.
Thanks in advance for any help you can give!

No, we build these parts of various grades of SS per our customers' prints, so there is typically little to no latitude in terms of raw materials...
You're not changing the raw material. It is just a plastic film on the material to protect it. You make your parts. Before use, the user can remove the film. We used to use some for decorative brass name plates.

I might be able to help you out. Please would you post me back with your name and contact information so we can chat offline?

I have been looking at something similar for a related problem but can't chat with my competitors.

Thanks,

Cosmetic defects will show up under flourescents at 100 foot-candles. The product is rotated and 'gun-sighted'. The trick is to learn to see the defect not just on the direct surface but as evidenced in the reflective distortion of the flourescent light.

Once one has experience with this a large surface can be checked pretty quickly by eye and the defects circled in grease/wax pencil for disposition.

We use this method for decorative chrome bumper shells on Chevy trucks so the volume is high and customer tolerance for a multitude of imperfections small. It was very helpful that we got together with our customer plants and ensured that we all agreed on borderline accepatable boundary samples and rejectable samples. These were then photographed and put into a book, but there is not substitute for having physical samples which are used for training new inspectors as well as making 'calibrated' accept/reject decisions.
