The airline was Northwest Airlines.

Oh Lord. Last time I flew Northwest I got delayed for several hours in Detroit. The stated reason was "The aircraft that we have isn't suitable for our purposes tonight."

You could see all the nervous flyers get freaked out, poor things. Our purposes, as far as I could tell, were to fly. They might as well have said "Well, we could probably get this thing in the air, but no guarantee it will stay there!"

I think what actually happened was a toilet overflow...

A month after 9.11 I had to fly back to my hometown with my children for my Mom's funeral. The kids were excused from school, but they had work to make up. We figured that they could do some of it while sitting around in the motel, etc. Unfortunately my youngest took his scissors, the kind that only cuts paper and nothing else. He was pulled out of line, questioned, frisked, scared to death. I had to jump in and "save" him and was nearly arrested. Even after I demonstrated that the scissors would not cut anything other than paper they were confiscated with no way to get them back.

I felt then, and still do, that some of the precautions being taken are a little over the top. It would not have bothered me so much if they were regular scissors, and I did tell him not to take any scissors or compasses along, but to pull a 9 year old out of line and away from his parent, without talking to his parent, and interogating them is just way too much.

I've flown NWA for years and never had any serious problems; no bad experiences, no lost luggage, and most of the time "on time" flights. I usually fly from Saginaw to Detroit to wherever and back. But I suppose something nasty is going to take place from time to time on any airline, since the personnel are all just human.

But it is good that you reported the bad experience. I do the same every time I have them (hotels, car rentals, etc.).

NW Airlines

I have flown NW for several years. I used to work for Ford and they were our standard airline. Mostly, they had good service back then. I have noticed a drop-off in service the last few years, but I think all airlines have experienced the same issues. I was in Nashville, TN. last summer when NW had the computer crash in their main terminals. All NW flights were grounded. They put me up for the night and got me a flight on SW the next morning. So consider this, I was trying to get to Detroit. That made my travel direction as going NE on NW and ending up flying SW to finally get NE. No wonder I am confused most of the time!
