Wes,
I will occasionally get up at 5 or 5:30 AM for a workout, but it's not much of a pleasure. I'm an afternoon workout guy. My body likes to get started slowly in the morning. Are you a morning person?

One of the associations I belong to has morning meetings (Mondays at 7:00 am) - the only way I ever make a meeting is to stay up all night.
When I was young like you, I routinely got up at 5:00 am to play golf, fish, hunt, make early "power breakfasts," and get in to the office early so I could get stuff done before the phone calls began.
I can still wake at 5:00 am, but it takes me three hours to go through all my morning "routines" before I leave the house. I always read two newspapers every morning with my breakfast - a habit that takes longer as the papers have gotten thicker over the years. My Monday papers weigh as much now as my Sunday papers used to 20 years ago and it's not all advertising supplements. Traveling to any kind of place during the morning or afternoon rush periods is a true test of character. Tuesday, it took me two hours to go 30 miles when I started at 4:00 pm.
I no longer run (knees), but I do walk and bike - problem is I do it to sightsee and gawk, not for the exercise.
