Re: What do yo do with your "free time" when you are traveling for work

My wife thinks I'm on vacation, but usually my evening is something like this:

Check email and the forums
Go to the hotel gym
Call home and talk to the wife and kids
Check email and the forums
Find some food to bring back to the room
Eat while I check email and the forums
Do whatever work I'm behind on (works best when the TV is off, but often it's on anyway...)
Check email and the forums
Go to bed too late

While driving to work or out station - radio, music and my collection of self improvement and motivational CDs.

During my free time - My work/involvement with a few NGOs (voluntary & community service) each of which had a few projects lined up every year. Also checking up on emails and forums like the Cove. For me, these are the most productive hours because there will be no disturbance from anybody.

Admittedly, I don't have to stay overnight much because ours is a small country and my traveling distance is usually not more than 350 km.

Re: What do you do with your "free time" when you are traveling for work

Once upon a time, I thought travelling for work was immensely glamorous.

That was a long time ago and many business trips ago.

My typical business trip goes something like:

* Plop on hotel bed and check out what's on offer - movies/TV/ room service etc.
* Find somewhere local to eat out if it looks single friendly (many don't, and particular for a lone woman). Otherwise, order room service.
* Watch film/TV/whatever IF it's available and I can see it - so many times, the screen is too far from whatever you're supposed to sit on. Wish I was home.
* Give up, go to bed and read/play computer games/whatever.

If I have time, I do like to visit museums/art galleries/whatever, and will often arrange a trip around something like this if I can.

But then, I (by choice) don't do a lot of business travel these days. Too much time spent in airports/hotel rooms/ etc. Frankly, business travel sucks. A lot.

My wife thinks I'm on vacation
I recognize that.

Ok, here goes:

Given half a chance I dump my stuff in the hotel room, bring the camera and go for a looong walk. I usually get a bit stiff and sore from traveling, as I am not used to sitting down for extended periods (I hardly ever sit down at work), so the walk is a good way to loosen up a bit and see the sights at the same time. Once or twice I have gotten so carried away that I came back to the hotel with literally bleeding feet.

Back at the hotel, my routine is similar to what Steve described, apart from the gym and eating in the room. I try to find some place outside the hotel for food.

If I go by rail or air, I usually read a lot. I would never travel without a book or two, and I usually pick some more up on the way. :read:

Re: What do you do with your "free time" when you are traveling for work

I travel a lot and quite often to countries that the TV is a problem to understand usually only finding an English news channel. If the internet is working and free I will listen to radio from home

I never eat in the room, except if I go out to a supermarket and buy bread and cheese or something like that

I always buy books and then give them to the English Library on the Kibbutz when I return.

I will wander around and try to find museums. When I was in Nagoya a few weeks ago (before the earthquake) I knew that I would have an afternoon free and found in advance TOYOTA Commemorative Museum of Industry and Technology which was very hands on and interesting as to the weaving technology.

On many occasions I have no time to see anything apart form airports (a lot) , hotels and plants.

I also find people very hospitable and mostly I am invited out for evening meals at least one night during my visit.

Re: What do you do with your "free time" when you are traveling for work

Depends where I'm travelling and what I'm doing when I arrive. However, I always have a couple of good books along to read, and if I have internet access (pretty rare now to not have it) I catch uip on emails, do some gaming, etc etc.

I have tried sightseeing in the places I visit, but usually I'm too tired or its too late/dark to really get a good feel for the place. I was in Coburg Germany last month, and never got more than 2 km from my hotel :)

Walk around for bit, find a place to eat someting (local if international trip, I really don't want to ride commerical airline for 29 hours to Malaysia to eat McDonalds), check email, write reports, plan next trip and sleep time.
