Calculating the Lead (Pb) ppm from the Plating Layer

Hi,
We do tested on a plated sample and the Pb result is 110ppm(mg/kg), it is a destructive test conducted by a lab. My question is can we calculate the Pb ppm if we assume that all are coming from the plating?

total weight of the sample is 48.84mg
the weight for plating is = 2.36mg
the weight for metal is = 36.48mg

total sample use for testing is @4000mg

What other consituents are there in the plating? Is this a tin/lead deposition, or something similar? If that's the case, just knowing the weight of the plating and the "tare" weight (the pre-plate weight of the substrate) isn't enough. What's the tolerance on the amount of lead present? How do you account for contaminants/inclusions?

We recently purchased an XRF 'gun' from Niton - it does analysis of metal composition, one of the limitation it has is that it only analyses the surface of the metal - this may be ideal for your needs.

Something to consider maybe.

(note - I have no connection with Niton :D)

This is a pure tin plating. We just want to find out the Pb content at the plating. Either it is due to contamination or what ever, as of now we are unable to know the Pb content at the plating.

Even though I don't understand the numbers that you have quoted, I thought I would answer your question whether you can express the lead concentration in terms of the plating layer; in my opinion you can do it only if you are sure (with evidence) that the base material does not contain lead.

Since you have referred to destructive analysis, I presume that the total product was dissolved in an acid mixture and tested for Lead (e.g. by atomic absorption spectrometry or Electronic absorption spectrometry after colour formation). In this case you will not be able to determine if the lead was present in the plating or the component that had been plated. In many cases where free-cutting brass is plated with solder or tin, the lead content of the brass can show up in the analysis. Normally the free-cutting brass has a lead content of about 2.0 to 3.5 % and this will show up in the analysis if the whole product is dissolved and tested for lead.

From my understanding, it's more easy for you to test the chemical of plating instead of finish goods because from the chemical we can detect if have element of Pb. However if the test for finish goods the potential that will contaminate with the base material. Please note that have homogenous material (cannot separate by mechanical method) and heterogeneous (can separate by mechanical method).

The only way to be truely sure is to test a sample of the plating material separately.
